Received job offer for the OR!!!

I received an offer today for a position in the OR!! I am new to the OR and really look forward to learning a lot and having job satisfaction. I am very excited about this oportunity, but a bit dissappointed with the starting salary. I would be making a little over $2 less per hour (which really is not a huge deal) except the fact that my RN friends are saying I should not take the position. Their reasoning is that I would be leaving a desk job for a position that is not only much more strenuous, but one that also pays less money. They stated that I would be playing catch up from this point on and to reconsider staying put in my currently position. There are shift diff's but I don't want to work odd hours just to make my current salary. My current position is not one that I want to do long term and it does not provide the job satisfaction that I am so desperately seeking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

keep your eye on the future.

once you get experience in the or, you will be able to command top pay.

but for now, you say you're excited.

that alone, is worth any loss in wages.

I think you just have to figure out what kind of nurse you are. There are some RN's that get very complacent in their careers and don't take any chances, aren't excited about furthering their skills etc. Then there are those of us who need to shake things up now and again because we love learning new things and thrive on the challenge. So far, it sounds like you are the second type, which is awesome.

The OR can be very hard work, but it is also very interesting. When you are in a good room working with people you both like and respect, the feeling of teamwork and comraderie is unbelievable. Yes, there can be cranky surgeons, but many of them treat nurses respectfully, because they know we can make or break how smoothly their room runs for the day. For the most part, our input is valued-sometimes you will need to troubleshoot equipment. Your pay might be a little less right now, but once you have a solid 1-2 years of OR experience under your belt, you can move to an oR that pays more or travel(which pays very well). I'm biased, but I say seize this opportunity and shine!

I've left positions over the years, taking a salary cut for the learing experiences available, and I always caught up quickly. I agree that you answered your own question. Go for it!!!

Well my opinion would be a little biased because I would LOVE to work in the OR, so I won't give any advice. But CONGRATS on this awesome job offer!!! Good luck!! :balloons::)

I am waiting for a slot in nursing school. I think it would be neat to work in the OR. I mentioned this to a friend of mine's brother who is a nursing manager. He said he felt OR nurses were a bit to specialized for his liking. --Personally, I like the idea of specializing, especially in the OR. But I get the impression that it would make you more specialized rather than generalized. Good luck! (Personally, I think you should do it as it interests you. I would keep an eye out for pay increase options...especially after you accrue some experience.)
