Real nursing school is not as boring as pharmacology right?

Published

For those of you who are currently in nursing school or are nurses, please just tell me that actual nursing school is not as boring as pharmacology class. I'm taking pharm right now and I find it to be the most boring college class I've ever taken. I know it's all important and I am taking it seriously, and I also don't find it very hard. But my mind get drained after studying this stuff. All because it's so ridiculously boring. Please please please tell me that nursing school itself is interesting, somewhat fun, and not as dull as pharm

Can't speak to nursing school any more (because it was 40+ years ago) but nursing PRACTICE is anything but boring. That's the prize at the end of the process, keep that in mind.

Pharm will make more sense when you're in nursing school clinical rotations and applying that knowledge to actual living, breathing patients. It can be difficult to learn medications without their proper clinical context.

Eventually, you should get to the point where you can quickly scan a patient's medication list and have a thumbnail sketch of that patient's clinical picture. In the meantime, don't write off pharm as "dull." You're missing out on a lot of information about your patient if you don't have a command of basic medications and their side effects/interactions.

I hated pharm too. It's a necessary tool. It's important to be aware of some of the side effects of meds that can make a patient sicker because of what's going on with them. Dopamine increases heart rate. It might be better to pick a different press or if they're already tachycardia, etc. I promise docs will sometimes pick not the ideal options and your suggestions and knowledge do matter. I had a patient bleeding pretty severely post delivery one night in critical care. One of the nurses suggested factor 7 to the doc. He ordered it and he believed it made a difference in the new moms outcome.

So yes, it's tedious but it really can make a difference. Hang in there.
