Radiology vs Sonography

Specialties Radiology

Hello,

So I recently applied to two Sonography programs that offer bachelors degrees. I have also looked into radiological technology.

If anyone has any insight as to which is a better field and also what is the best way to go about these careers it would be very helpful.

I am curious if an associates degree in either of these is enough to get a job.. I know that is a broad question but there are so few Bachelors programs when it comes to sonography I think it will be very hard to get accepted into one.

I have also thought of getting an associates in radiology tech. then going back for a certificate in sonography... would that be a good plan?

Any input is appreciated!

Thank you!

Not many nurses would have answers for you, as Radiologic Technology and Sonography are very different fields from nursing.

You might look at the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography association's official site, here: Official ARDMS Website | American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography | ARDMS for what-all persons in this field do, and what the requirements are for obtaining certification.

www.asrt.org (American Society of Radiologic Technologists) and www.arrt.org (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) can provide info on becoming a Radiologic Technologist.

You can do a google search for the nearest instructional program.

Best of luck to you in your decision-making!

EllenMarie,

I am a radiologic technologist registered in x-ray, CT scan, and MRI. There are so few jobs in my field that I have been FORCED to go back to school for nursing (it's been almost 3 years since I could find work). Ultrasound will have more jobs-but not many, and there is no guarantee, many sonographers are out of work too. If you go to school, your life will be much easier if you go for something in demand, like nursing. I know so many x-ray techs that are paying off student loans, but can't find any work-it's awful.

I hope this helps you...Good luck, whichever you decide!
