I don't work in labor and delivery, but I was having a discussion with a couple nurses tonight about how our deliveries with our children were. . .
Well I got to my story, about how the nurses were telling me to "hold it in" because the doctor hadn't arrived and how badly I wanted to push but five mins. later fortunately the doc arrived (I don't think I could've held out much longer) and I began to push.
Then the other two nurses said "I learned how to deliver a baby in NS, didn't you?" And I told them well, no not exactly. I had learned all about pregnancy and what to do in what situation, and I guess if the situation ever DID occur, I could probably safely deliver a baby. But no, no formal training.
So am I the only nurse who DIDN'T learn how to deliever a baby in school?? I am pretty sure, (unless I missed a lab) that NO this was not an objective!!

Nope didnt have that lab practical---and on top of it, I never even saw a lady partsl delivery till I was a nurse for 6 months....the only delivery's I saw in nursing school were C/S.

I think it makes sense for nurses to have that knowledge. Delivering a baby is not that complicated in most cases and babies can come anytime, anywhere when they decide they're ready. I think it's a little ridiculous to tell a mother who's ready to deliver to wait until the doctor arrives, but that's just me.

Same here. No vag in nursing school, as a doula but not specifically in nursing school. I do not think that nurses are trained in nursing school to do this...my friend was taught in her EMT class for emergency situations, but we were not even given the opportunity to do a cervical check let alone deliver a baby...sorry but I would not want a nursing student delivering my baby...we learn so little in OB compared to other nursing areas as well as what there is in OB...they do not have 6month orientations in OB because you learned it all in school.........

I actually did learn how to deliver a baby in NS. We even had this prego simulation dummy that we loaded this fake baby into and out it popped. Actually pretty realistic except that there was no mess...

We saw lots of babies delivered - both lady partsl and c/s ; but as students, we weren't really allowed to do much. It was a great learning experience, observing, but if I were going into L&D I would have liked to be more hands on.
