Is suctioning an independant nursing action in effective airway clearance?

Also can a nurse initiate a respiratory consult?

Thanks

Margaret

That would greatly depend on your hospital policy. For a careplan I would err on the side of caution and say that you make suctioning a dependent nursing intervention. What kind of suctioning are you talking about? NT OT ET? Using a suction cath or a yaunker?

Having worked on a stepdown unit for some years I will tell you that if a patient is in trouble, we would hesitate in a minute to grab suction and suction them. Honestly, I'm not sure about whether or not it's an independent action.

A respiratory consult requires a doctor's order. Reason: the patient is going to be charged for it. No doctor's order; no payment from the insurance company/Medicare/Medicaid for the service.
