Quick question about PN and timing.

Hi everyone,

I was curious if anyone has had this ordered and knew the rationale for delaying adding lipids to a patient's PN. For example, a pediatric pt is post-BMT and has their PN but the lipids haven't been infusing and are hung separately from the protein/carb solution a day or so later.

I've looked high and low at all the research on this and can only find the evidence for use of TPN with cancer pts and whether or not it provides more of a benefit than just enteral nutrition alone. My hunch is it might have something to do with VOD and the way all the lipids, carbs and protein are processed by the liver. Any info would be greatly appreciated! This has been bugging me for days!
