Im at the end of my lvn program and im considering the 30 unit option for my RN (i live in cali) , ive been told that once i get the 30 unit option diploma i CANNOT go back for my ADN or BSN (well i can but it won't reflect on my license) and im ok with that but my questions to you are. Can i get my MSN/NP ? Do you have any regrets about becoming a diploma nurse? Is there a big pay difference between diploma nurses and ADN nurses? Are job opportunities limited ?

Thanks in advance

DO NOT BOTHER WITH A DEAD-END. If you can, go into a BSN program asap. If not, check out your local community college for info on their ADN program.

i really dunno

but i only wanna to say best of luck

There are RN-BSN programs for ADN and diploma holders, if you wanted to advance after working a few years as a RN. But if you know for sure your goal is to be a NP, might as well start off with a BSN.

I dont know what my goal is yet , the only goal i have right now is to become an RN. I was just curious about the NP afterwards, i actually called the board of nursing in ca and she told me once u choose the 30 unit option you cannot go back to get your ADN or BSN (you can BUT it does not change your license she didnt mention MSN or NP thats why i asked) I can see myself happy as a floor nurse i was just curious to hear what current diploma nurses have to say .

I think the BON might have told you that because an RN is an RN, regardless of degree level. I'm not from California though.

Yeah, what the previous poster said. Regardless if you are diploma, ADN, BSN your license will say the same thing- RN. The only problem is if you want to go back to school for anything you will need your BSN. If you want to be a nurse why not start out on that path, you will get more time in school which will give you some extra experience and some places will pay a little bit more for a BSN.

I'm a diploma nurse and it has never been a factor in the jobs I've had over the years. I've worked in hospitals, home care, management and the health insurance industry. Presently I'm working in a little hospital in New Zealand - where the standard is a BSN. The are still happy to have a nurse such as myself, with a lowly diploma - and a lot of experience. (The pay here is no different based on level of education - it has to do more with years of experience.)

be very careful with 30 unit option. you will only be able to practice in california and can not endorse

your rn license in any other state. diploma nurses can edorse anywhere.

are you sure you will live in california forever?

This will probably not be a problem for you because schools that offer the 30 unit option state "space available" only, and space is never available. Since you mention a MSN, further education, do yourself a favor and get a BSN or start with an ASN. Do not waste any time or effort trying to go the 30 unit route, better to be on a waiting list somewhere and get a degree you can use in the future.

Yes i understand what 30 unit option is . I know i cant ever work outside of cali (i would Never leave cali, never have, never will) so that does NOT bother me in the least, im actually looking for the responses from other 30 unit or diploma nurses. As of right now im doing my adn classes, as for the pp that said "there's never space", i am lucky enough to have a relative that is head of a nursing department at a local jc so i can get in thats not an issue. i have the 30 unit pre reqs done im working on the other ones so im tempted to just go now, thats why i wanted to check with others who've done this before.
