Questions about OR nursing

Published

I got my RN license in October 2009 and since then I worked in the hospital and in the family physician's office where I am still currently working. I have always being intrigued and attarcted to the OR and that was actually why I wanted to go in to nursing to begin with. I observed a few surgeries as a student and that was the best part of my clinical experience ever!! Now where I work the MD taught me how to suture and when I get a chance to do that I get very excited... but that's the most excitement I really get...

I finally decided to take a perioperative nursing course starting this fall, but I am worried that it would be almost impossible for me to find a job, as I live in ON and by the looks of it jobs are scarce right now.... plus almost all the OR postings want experience. Any advice on how I should be going about finding a job in the OR and what my real chances are of finding one soon after completing the OR course? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Call various hospitals and ask if they have a perioperative course/internship for new grads or those new to the OR. You may be surprised at how many do because the thing now is for ORs to "grow their own" nurses. Good luck!:)
