Questions about Bellevue Hospital Center

Published

Hi Everyone,

I am a new graduate who recently received a job offer from Bellevue Hospital. The position I got is a medical/surgical position.

I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing their insight on how the working environment is over there and what is the current starting salary since it's running under HHC. Do they offer BSN and certificate differentials?

And if there are any words of advice that you can give, I would gladly appreciate any feedback! Thank you!

Not sure about the work environment first hand because I am working at a different HHC hospital for 8 years + but I know prenty of people who really enjoy working there. If I transferred to another HHC hospital then Bellevue would be my first choice. I am also a new grad, just passed nclex last week. I work under the Dept of Psychiatry in a different position in mental health/addictions and waiting for my position to transfer as a RN. All salaries within HHC the same. Current staff nurse is just above $67k and come July it should be close to $69k because of the union increase. Night shift differential around $5k, BSN differential around $1300 from what I last remembered but it could have increased since then, not sure. The Certs Im not positive so I dont want to give you false information. When do you start? Let me know how things go. They should be sending you an official new hire letter which indicates the salary and additional pay.

Thank you so much for replying dualfocusrn! They said if I process early, I can start July 6th. Congratulations on passing the NCLEX! I hope you get that RN position at your allocated HHC hospital. Wow that's great that the salary has gone up. I heard that the BSN differentials is now $3000. Do you happen to know why the HHC hospitals offer lower salaries than other hospitals? I heard it's because of the long-term benefits. But how are the benefits like? I will definitely keep you updated on how things go.

Hi Congats on landing a job at Bellevue. Did you apply online? And how long did it take you to get a response?

Hi friendlyelse,

Thank you! I did not apply online. I knew someone working at Bellevue and and she referred me to work on the floor. I waited since October 2014. They finally called me the beginning of June and I interviewed with the director. I heard back 2 weeks later that I've been offered a position.

I assume the salary difference btwnn HHC and the private sector is related to the benefits. The nurses union at hhc is NYNSA, good pension plan and low to nono cost out of pocket medical. Tuition reimbursement too, not sure how much though. Its still hard to figure out whether it weighs out when many private hospitals are have a base salary of 80k...idk. Nice to know about. The degree differential...nice. Did you find out about certs?

Yes I agree, dualfocusrn. I don't know if the long term benefits will really outweigh the salaries at private hospitals in NYC. For now, I just hope I gain the experience I need and hope most of the staff there are supportive. I still did not find out about the cert differentials. I will keep you updated on that and additional information once I find out.

Hey Pochacco meant to ask you if you had. Pharmacology/Med math exam when interviewed? Looks like I have an interview coming up soon and I want to be prepared...although I have heard that the exams differ across HHC hospitals. Thanks

Oh, and what type of questions did the interview consist of?

Whoo hoo! Got the job offer today!

How long did it take to get the first interview after applying? I've been applying since last week of April and most of my friends say thats not long. Did you only apply online?

I did apply online but I did an internal application as I already work in the hospital but in a different position within the same department. But in general yes they tend to take a while to respond anywhere from weeks to months. Even with me being currently employed there the HR processing time can take a while.
