Questions About Airforce Nursing

Published

Hello,

I am a travel nurse, soon to be Airforce nurse. I am prior service, serving 4 years active and 3 years reserve in the Army as an enlisted. I got out and went nursing school and my speciality is O.R.

The other day my recruiter suggested that I might want to try for clinical nurse speciality instead of O.R. nursing. Initially I said no, but I tried to review just what exactly the Airforce considers Clinical Nursing. I mean is it Med-Surg would I be on a floor or what. Also, I not to sure that I want to give up my speciality, because if I wanted it back I am sure I would have to jump through hoops to get it. Any comments or suggestions?

Interesting, I don't see any reason to give up OR as a speciality as long as you have at least one year full time RN expeirence in the OR and you aren't trying to go to some extremely small base with only a couple of OR nurses there.

Clinical nurse 46N is a general nurse it is basically med-surg/clinic etc.

Is there some reason the recruiter suggested this?

well as far as bases, i would be happy with anything in japan or europe.

as far as my recruiter, well i had to explain to him exactly what it is an o.r. nurse does. he said after i schooled him, he threw that idea out the window.

i guess it came up because he had another officer coming from the navy who was an icu nurse, but wanted to take a clinical nurse position to get a preferred assignment.
