I had my orientation last night and they gave us the info on our uniforms and equipment. The requirements for shoes are they have to be white leather and not open toe or heel. I'm looking for recommendations from current students/nurses. One of the students recommended the leather Sketchers.
They had three nursing students there talking about the program and two of them highly recommended using a fanny pack instead of stuffing your pockets. I didn't buy the one they were selling because it was $18, I'm sure I can find a white one cheaper. For those of you that have tried fanny packs, do you like them better than using pockets?
We can buy any brand of uniform and they have a local store that offers a discount for students, $30 for the pants and top. It has to be all white. The pants have to be pull-up, no drawstrings allowed. The shirt has to be collared and can either be button-up or zip-up. We also need to a buy lab coat.
Thanks :)

Mainly a very comfy pair of sneakers work for me (of course that are all white or just a bit of lettering)
I wish I could use the fanny pack but they are very specific on the uniformes here, no fanny's allowed. But I am sure going to get one after graduation.
Thats AWSOME they let you buy any uniform you want from anywhere. We had to buy ours from out of state and they were expensive! Plus they have blue strips and patches so we can't bleach them entirly.

i wore new balance the first semester then found dickies shoes (going into 4th in the fall) - they are even lighter than new balance with great support....you need something light weight that you are comfortable in b/c you'll be doing alot of walking.
we just stuff our pockets - first semester we had to bring bp cuffs and all that, but now we just use the IVACs at the hospital so all we carry are our scopes, scissors, penlights and pens in our pockets.
i still bring a bookbag and leave it in the breakroom...in there i carry my drug book, dx test book, a dze process book and a GOOD careplan book (ie Carpentio or Mosby's)
good luck to you! you're in for a ride!

I'm really not that into fashion, but it's my opinion that a fanny pack is NEVER a good idea. :uhoh21:
That's the main reason I couldn't bring myself to buy one last night... I was having horrible flashbacks of the 80's :)
:rotfl:
I guess the 80's are coming back though. I recently purchased some florescent sparkly jelly bracelets, I just had to, I loved them when I was an 80's child. I think just as long as you don't get one with alternating pink, green, and purple panels, then you will be okay. :chuckle

I wore a pair of white sketchers for clinical. I bought one pair for the whole program and only wore them for that. I couldn't believe that they lasted the whole program.
Definately lucky on your uniforms. We had ones that looked like they were for men...............yuck!! We had to order ours from Dove Uniforms and pay 40$ a piece and they recommended 2.
Good luck and welcome to the boards!!

Sounds WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than some of the other terminology i've heard.
When i was in clinical, a fanny pack would have gotten in my way, not to mentio since it sticks out it could brush up against stuff and be a pack of germs.
Kmart's Cobbie Cuddlers are what i wore in clinical, they're all of 25 bucks a pair and they feel great. I don't wear them now, because they are tie-on shoes and with my line of work, i REALLY don't want to touch my shoes with my hands.

I stuffed my pockets the first semester and vowed I would never do that again. I was doing a wound change and the contents of my pocket spilled out every where. My scrub top even became uncomfortable due to the amount of stuff (steth, BP cuff, notebook, hemo's, scissors, pen, drug cards, etc.) being stuffed into the pockets. We were not allowed to wear lab coats on the floor.
Fanny packs or kangaroo pouches are not always worn on the outside of your clothing! Several of the guys in the various semesters wore their pouches to the font under their scrub top. You can't even tell they have them on.
I am definitely going to pick one up. I even thought about picking up a cotton carpenters pouch and adding a few stitches to it. Just a thought.
