Question about Respi or Droplet precaution / isolation

Published

If you have a patient w/ a respi or droplet precautions / isolation do you leave the equipment in the room, or take it and clean it when you use it on another patient??? Example such as a b/p cuff or thermometer??

It varies by facility. Some patients on contact or resp precautions have their own BP cuffs, etc but they often don't.

I'm reviewing right now and haven't taken the exam yet, but take this for what it's worth. I think in terms of the NCLEX, there are situations where have to assume that we live in a perfect world. So in any situation regarding transmission based precautions like droplet, it's best to answer leave the equipment in the room and use one set of equipment for one patient to prevent further spread. Again, this is based on what I've reviewed so far.

Yea, I'd probably put separate equipment, or cohort equipment maybe (like you could share one BP cuff for two patients in the same room with RSV).

Real world....ha, just think about the ER . I worked in a pedi ER and we had our BP cuff and thermometer on a rolly thing and it went from room...to room...to room, regardless. Same as in the triage room, all patients shared the same equipment regardless of if it was a newbie coming in with fever for a sepsis work-up, or a 5 year old with chicken-pox... *shudder*

i had a question like this on NCLEX and decided to leave it. it really bothered me for a few days after taking the test whether or not i got it right but i passed with only 85 q's so i most likely did get it right.
