Question about being a new grad and a new mommy....

Published

I posted this on the main board but thought I'd post it here too since you're all new grads and all...

Hi Everyone! I have a question I hope someone will be able to give me some insight on...

My husband and I have been trying to conceive our first child for about 8 months or so...but no luck yet...I suspected it would not happen right away which is why we decided to go ahead and give it a try while I was still in school. Anyway, my question is this...if I should get pregnant in the next month or two (hey...I'm feeling lucky!), I would be due right around graduation or shortly thereafter. I only planned on working part time after having a baby (working weekends only) and I'm curious to know if that would be possible. I'm fairly sure I would be able to get a job working weekends only (which is what I'd want) but my concern is about orientation. As a new grad, don't you get a long orientation? Can that orientation be split over a longer period of time to accomodate a part-time employee? Or is this something that has to be completed full-time for however long it lasts? How long is the typical new grad orientation period? I'm eager to start my career as a nurse, but I'm also eager to be a mom. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I'm dying with curiousity too b/c my dh and I are in the same boat. The recruiter of the hospital where I want to work at told me that orientation would last anywhere from three to six months. I'm sure someone has given birth in the middle of orientation. Anyone, anyone?

All the new grads at our hospital get oriented full time for 8-12 weeks, then after orientation, they go to their respective departments and shifts. So a new grad gets approx 8 weeks on day shift, then 4 weeks on nocs before they go off on their own schedule. You may be able to set some type of part time orientation up with your employer though. Can't hurt to ask.

I have no idea, but I wanted to say good luck on trying for a baby! Do you want a boy or a girl?? :)

Hi:

I did invitro in the second semester of RN school because they called and it was my turn. School had started just a couple weeks prior. Well thank God it worked the first time. It was a tough semester I was in Med Surg I. I had a 50 minute drive every morning and every evening home. I had all day sickness instead of morning or night. I was pregnant two semesters got out for the summer had her 2 weeks later and went back for my final semester with a newborn who of course was wonderful been sleeping all night since 5 weeks. After doing invitro I had to give myself an IM injection every 12 hours through 16 weeks of the pregnancy to prevent miscarriage. It was rough but I didn't quit I felt like it sometimes. She is now 14 months old I graduated last December had 265 questions on boards and was unsuccessful in January then again the end of March. I finally passed in June and I've gotten a wonderful paying job with wonderful hours. God has a plan and it works according not necessarily ours. Hope this helps Good Luck. :) :p

I got pregnant during nursing school..I went through four semesters pregnant and after I had the baby, I still had two to go. I graduated on time and took my boards soon after. I'm saying all that to say that it can be done, school and baby. When I started working as a graduate nurse, I went through a six week orientation then went on my own. However, I was lucky. The hospital I work at has a daycare. That played a large part in deciding where I wanted to work. And I work 12 hour shifts and they are open thatlong everyday. So, look into any hospitals if any that have day care, that may make things a little easier. If not, don't give up. You can definitely finish school and have a baby. One of my classmates had twins and took a semester off but still finished. So it can be done. Good luck.......

just wanted to say that if you look, you might find someone willing to do that! i got pregnant my first semester of nursing school. had my daughter after semester 2 and took 1 year off to stay home with her. i went back when she turned one and just finished in august and just passed the nclex!

i inquired at the hospital i did my preceptorship in and they seemed fine with me working part time (2 12s a week) after my orientation. i am fine working full time for the orientation. i am now getting in touch with them again as they told me to call when i passed the boards. hopefully i will be working there soon!
