Question (graduate nurse letter)

Published

Maybe someone out there will know the answer....

If you have a graduate nurse letter good for 6 months to work under an RN's license with an ATT letter and you fail the nclex the first time, then repay and get a NEW ATT letter can you then work under the orignial circumstances as a graduate nurse or can you only work once you take the test and pass it? Where I am at I am working another position, but just went over my graduate nurse letter and according to what I read with the new ATT letter and the GN letter I can work for up to 6 months....

anyone have thoughts on this?

Once you fail the first test, your interim permit to work as a graduate nurse is forfeited. The permit to work as a new graduate RN is only valid for 6 months OR until you take your test. If you fail, then this permit is no longer valid. ATT is only your authorization to test or to retake the test, it does not allow you to practice nursing. Where I work, they give you a choice to stay and work as a CNA or if your in the ER, an EMT. I hope this helps. If you're retaking, Best of LUCK to you,

Zarina, RN:nurse:

Graduate nurse status is a "grace period" based on the assumption that you're going to pass the NCLEX-RN when you take it. Once you don't pass the NCLEX, then the assumption no longer applies and you're just another person without a license. No more grace period ...

As Zarina noted, most employers will offer you the option of working as a CNA or other non-licensed position while you wait to re-test, rather than just let you go.

Best of luck on your re-test.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was going to bring it up at work tomorrow, but I couldn't wait. I can't wait until my ATT letter arrives so I can reschedule my test!!!! I am studying with ONLY the Saunders Book and then the CD like Suzanne said. She has guided many people in the right direction so I am sticking with her plan (and having lots of FAITH!!)

Thank you so much.
