question about BON--probally silly

I have read many many times on here that a nurse turned herself into the BON and that she met with the BON. What is this about? I turned myself in by calling my states health professionals recovery program and getting treatment but never had to get involved with the bon. Just curious. Thanks.

Sassy - Hey! I live in Louisiana and used to be in our state's recovering program. I was caught diverting narcs at work. When I was caught by our manager, I was told to call the state BON. I am not sure if the BON here is the same people that you called in your state. The BON is the only people we have to report to here.

Sassy,

Each state has their own procedures for dealing with impaired nurses. Some have an alternative to discipline program which may or may not be run by the BON. In some states, a nurse can enter this alternative program without reporting to the BON. Some states require employers or colleagues to report the nurse to the BON.

Sassy, I think it depends on the state. In Massachusetts the Substance Abuse Recovery Program is operated by and through our Board of Nursing Registration. So I self-reported to the BON and they hooked me up with SARP.

the Texas BON, policy is that one can be referred to TPAPN (peer assistance prgram), BON can refer, empployer can, or the nurse can refer herself. After TPAPN tx.plan is completed, successfuly, there is no disciplinary action on the nurses lis. not successfuly completing TPAPN the nurse is refered to the BON.

Sometimes if a nurse self refers to the Tx.BON, the BON may have an informal meeting with her, and refer the nurse to the peer assistance program in Tx. if appropriate.
