PVAMU or HBU's Nursing Program

Published

Hi!

I just recently got some accepted to both nursing schools. But really undecided on which program is best. Please give me some feedback!

Thank you.

lol. I was in your same position, but i ended up choosing PV, mostly because i got awarded a better scholarship. Also, I heard HBUs nursing program was going through alotta problems since like 6 proffessors left and the dean of the college of nursing left, so i wanted to avoid the fiasco. Mind you, this was in spring/fall 2009. So i would check what current students have to say about HBUs program

Im in the pv nursing program now, first semsester, and im very happy to be here. So far, no major complaints.

Thanks!!!! I know there is a new dean for HBU so I will look more into it. I just want to know which school is more worth going to.

Hey Student 3467,

Please post any info you hear on HBU. I have been unsuccessful with feedback when it comes to this school.

Thank you

This is funny because in SPRING 2009, I was in your situation and UNFORTUNATELY I chose HBU. I am not from Houston so housing was a problem. My parents convinced me to choose HBU only because of the on-campus dorms. I'm in my last semester now and REGRET ever coming here. I have been sad almost every day since coming here in 2009. If I could go back I would HAVE NEVER came here. This school is very expensive, staff is vey rude and show favoritism towards specific students. I just knew from day 1 that this was a wrong choice but I stuck it out. My advice stay away from here and warn other people. Anyone who tells you that this school is good is probably one of those students who are shown favoritism by the teachers, or forgive my language, an ass-kisser (we have many of those in our class). There are so many negatives that I don't have the energy to go through and list them but if anyone has serious concerns about this school, don't hesitate to contact me. I have no reason to lie, I'm close to being done with this place and would never lie about something like this, it would be a bad reflection on me. However, the truth is this place is not a first, second or third choice school only go here if you have NO OTHER CHOICE. God Bless.

Well thank god I didn't go there! I'm sorry for your bad experience. At least u came out there with ur degree And u can walk away and never look back :D

I just got accepted to the HBU nursing program yaaay!! I have been trying to get into the program for 2 years now..first I was trying to get into the HCC ADN..I took the HESI 3 times to try to get into their program..I thought that was it for me to go there so I didn't even bother retaking the test nemore (i just focused on finishing my regular associates in arts) ..at HCC their rule is you have to take the HESI and pass all subjects in one shot, and if you fail 1 subject but pass all others you fail, so you basically have to take the test until you pass all subjects in one sitting. So b/c of this I kinda gave up on the test. I thought this test rule was the same for all nursing schools but I found out all nursing schools have their own rules. I Thank God, I found out just in time..right after finishing my associates I applied to PV and got accepted to the main Univ. so I just had to get accepted into Nursing, the nursing advisor told me my test scores had expired they only allow test scores within 2 years of taking the exam(i didn't know they expired! and I also thought you could retake the hesi as many times until you pass)here at PV they only allow 2 attempts of taking the HESI..so then I called HBU and asked what was the HESI expiration for their school and found out that it's 3 years, and they only allow the first 2 attempts of taking the test as well..they take the highest scores from both exams, so if you fail 1 subject(lets say reading) and pass all others on the first try and then on the second try you fail math but pass all others, they just take the highest scores from those 2 tests. So because of this I was able to get into their nursing program.. I applied to HBU, got accpeted to the main Univ. took the proficiencies that they required( reading, computer exams for me but there's math and writing as well, i didnt have to take those) and now im ready to start nursing school in Spring 2012!!! im so, so, so happy!! oh and I did all this just in time, my hesi scores were going to expire in 1 month for HBU. I asked HBU that what if I took the test 3 times already, they said it didn't matter, they only look at the first 2 tests..so if you took it 3 times but passed on the first 2 tries and the scores expired, you just have to retake the test again..and i think PV takes the highest scores of the first 2 tries as well..oh then after i finished my associates i found out that at hcc they only allow you to take the test 3 times and if you fail all attempts you just have to do the whole process again: orientation, application, testing(i was thinking if i had no other choice I was just going to do this until i passed) oh but they don't tell you this secret i found out b/c i spoke with the HCC dean.. my advice, if your ready to start nursing school make sure you are already a student at the school..im a new current student at HBU so that increased my chances of getting in big time..well yea so thats my story!! i hope this info. helps you guys!!!

Hi !! congrats on getting in... im thinking about applying there for Fall 2012.. if you dont mind me asking what was your GPA or HESI scores??

My GPA wasn't even high it was barely a 3.2 I think. My hesi scores were average: A&P 85, Math 75, Grammar 75, Reading 85. I really think they only take their own students over others, which is why I got in. All the students at the nursing student orientation for the spring semester were current HBU students. I strongly recommend you take your entrance exams right after finishing your A&P's because your brain is fresh on the subject. If you let time pass by YOU WILL FORGET your stuff. I got a lower score the second time I took the hesi on the A&P part. If your done with your pre-reqs take your exams and see where you can apply depending on your scores AND enroll full-time at the school you want to go to, they really do look at that..(that's what the counselor at the nursing dept. told me to do) She was like "if you really want to get accepted into our program YOU NEED TO ENROLL FULL TIME HERE" emphasizing that that's the only way I would get in. If your GPA is not that high please do not try to apply and hope to get in without being one of the school's students. I know a few that did this and did not get in. Also, think realistically, don't apply to only 1 school and expect to get in. Apply to ALL schools if you can. My friend applied to UT with a 3.7 GPA got all A's on her hesi and got denied, maybe for the same reason that I think they also take their own students over others. She enrolled at HBU and got accepted for the following semester. Good Luck!

I'm currently enrolled at HBU but not yet in the nursing program. But they have really great professors who wants to pass you. Some of my friends are in the program and they said they've liked it so far. It's tough... but nursing in general is tough. I would love to get accepted here for Fall 2012, but the tuition keeps increasing and increasing each year and I'm not sure if I could afford it! But in my opinion, HBU > PV biiig time. Good luck!

Thanks! Don't worry about the price, HBU is a great school and worth it in my opinion. I will owe a lot of money after I graduate though but its good to know you can start paying it back 6 months after you finish school. You will get accepted for sure, and yeah the program is tough. You have to really give it all you got, It is really hard for me though because I have a baby and its hard to study with him around. I have never been so stressed out from school before until now, it's a lot of work! Im just hoping that somehow I make it through :)
