Hi I am a nurse for about 7 years now. With varied experience on ICU, medsurg, rehab, case management and ER. I am currently working on the medicine floor, but thinking of going back to case management at the same time going back to school to do my NP. Is doing CM good idea while doing school as NP? Does the NP school require you to be working on a clinical job while being in school, or it depends on the specialty like for instance geriatrics or primary?

Hello Mystiquex,
We moved your thread to the Student NP forum for the best response.
Good luck with your NP plans.

If you mean as a hospital CM, then no while in school because you will be working 5 days/week, and you will not be able to adjust your schedule for clinicals. Insurance companies have CMs, but while your setting will be an office (sometimes work from home) you still need to be present 5 days/week and your pay would be substantially reduced.

NP school doesn't require you to be working as a bedside nurse or in a clinical setting. You could do case management while in NP school but like the previous poster mentioned it may get more difficult as you get to the clinical portion of your program because most NP clinicals are M-F 8-5 type hours and most case management positions are also M-F 8-5 type hours so depending on how many hours a week you are required to do clinicals and how many hours per week your job is there may not be enough hours during the work week to do both.
