Hello Alllnurses,

Where can I find information about the job outlook for psych nurse practitioners? The schools in my area have closed admission to their Psych NP programs, which makes me nervous about the job market.

Also, any recommendations as to how I can find a Psych NP to gain a greater understanding of the field? I have tried the apna.org website, but to no avail.

Consider looking into state agencies. I work for a state hospital in Texas and PMHNP are always needed.

There is a national shortage of psychiatrists and the demand for psych NPs is high in many areas. If your local schools have closed admissions for PMHNPs, it may be because they don't have the faculty to teach the courses or the preceptors for clinicals--hence, high demand. Only 2 psych NPs applied for the job I have now. I precept and know that all of the most recent graduate from the local university have found jobs.

As for what psych NPs do, search previous posts here and on the NP page and you should be able to find several responses.

I am also thinking about psych i have heard so many good things about Psych NP, where i currently live the job market is awsome for psych np. I am so excited and motivated about it, hopefully I will get accepted into n.p and can begin my journey.

I'm currently in a locums position where they searched for 6 months trying to find a PMHNP. I've had so many job offers I had to turn my phone off to get some sleep!
