Psych np or family np

Published

Fast question I wanted to ask. For the south is it better to go for psych np if that's what I like or is it better to do family np first and maybe psych later? I only ask because my area is Florida and maybe Georgia, and I don't see to many listing on indeed for NPs in fever am for both states. And the listings for psych are few and far in between. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Oh I have psych and med surg experience and I'm bilingual if that helps at all

The national need is higher for psychiatric experts. You can find a job in psychiatry with both certifications. If you have time get one, start working, and get the other while you're working. I have time and money to pick up the FNP training, but I'm grossly apprehensive about doing reproductive medicine. I'm just not into doing pelvics. Or DREs for that matter. If I could skip that, I'd go for it although I don't think I'd make direct use of it.

If you truly enjoy and love psych I would go for that first. You could always return back for your FNP. Based on some of the postings here, some parts of Florida appear to be very saturated with FNPs, however being bilingual is definitely an asset. Georgia may be a better option as a psych NP and as PsychGuy pointed out nationally the need is greater for psych NPs at this time. Something to consider if you decide to expand your focus beyond those two states.
