Psych Literature

Published

Hi everyone! I've recently started training as a new psychiatric nurse. I was wondering however, does anyone have any recommendations of literature or textbooks that I could read that I can utilize and strengthen my nursing practice? Would love to be able to keep up to date with information. Thanks!

What really helped me was youtube oddly enough. They have great resources for motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and interventions for anxiety. Learning non-pharm intervention really helps get through the day to day with pts. The hardest pts you will have to deal with are those with personality disorders. I had to learn the hard way, since we didn't really go over them in nursing school, I played right into a borderline personality d/o patient on my first few shifts and it lead to a huge blow up from the patient when I finally couldn't meet one of her requests. Also manic bipolar's can be difficult but if you find what distracts them, that can help. If you know how to deal with personality disorders, especially antisocial and borderline, you'll have a one-up on most people and you will make your day and your patient's day better. I was stupid and didn't research as much as I should have because it wasn't the job I wanted but I fell in love with it. You have to be creative every day on your interactions with people. Welcome to the world of psych. If you have any questions, just let me know. I hope that helps.
