I just started psych clinicals and the instructor informed us that all that was expected for the first day was to visit the unit. Observe what was going on and "get a feel for the unit operations". After our visit we were asked how it felt to be on the unit.
With that said I do have experience as I worked in a major prison facility where due to US mental health budget cuts, prison populations are saturated with mental health offenders.
I think you need to be comfortable with yourself and be prepared each clinical visit. Expect the unexpected and really listen to people most of them want help.
Remember safety is always the key and here are a few safety tips:
Never take your cell phone in with you
Wear comfortable flat shoes or shoes with a heel no greater than 2 inches
Wear pants and shirts that are comfortable but not tight fitting
Always keep track of your belongings and never promise anything
Keep a sense of humor it will take you far
Good luck in clinicals so far mental health is my favorite next to geriatrics.
