Project ideas for ob nurse training/online?

Published

I also posted in the nurse educator forum, but thought I'd come here and ask the ob nurses themselves! I'm an ob nurse, and a nurse educator (and a lactation consultant and homebirth midwife). I am teaching in the ob unit part time and working on my masters degree in nursing education.

For my nursing project/practicum, I need to develop a project that entails training for nurses (or it could be students or patients) and then proceed to take this project and actually put it into action.

I'd like to do something practical, something that is actually wanted and needed, and something that I can continue to use in the real world.

I'd like to find out what ob nurses see a need for? I'm thinking maybe something in the way of online training since time and travel always seem to get in the way?

One possibility is developing a breastfeeding training course that is totally online? And awarding a certificate for nurses. Are nurses already doing this and getting certified through their organizations? Would ob nurses be interested in doing this online? With simulations, modules, demos?

What else do you see a need for? CEU's? Training ideas?

I also like the idea of online conference type ideas where CEU's are awarded. I know there are tons of great conferences around the country, but I also know that the cost of travel and expenses make it very difficult for most of us to actually get there.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel though, so any and all input would be great! Thanks, I would really appreciate this, I have a few weeks to mull this over before I have to dig in and get started!

Teleconference is becoming very popular and cheaper than travel. Email Power Point slide. Dial in the morning of. Allows for discussion and interaction while information is shared. Allows smaller hospitals to get CEU's and more people to attend.

This sort of already exists. Health E-Learning aka Breast-Ed. A lot of nurses who are trying to earn CERPs in order to write the IBCLC exam take these courses.

I have taken these courses and they are very good. I am planning on taking the ones for midwives/physicians to recertify for the lactation exam. I don't know why the local hospitals aren't using more of this, but they seem to be looking for more of the "certified lactation consultant". I had helped developed a course for this, but the cost is prohibitive for most nurses, the place where I helped design the course is charging 700.00 for this course. Most nurses aren't interested in paying that much and with budget cutbacks, the local hospitals aren't paying those fees anymore.

I think the idea of teleconferencing is great and definitely see that increasing. Health e-learning offers the "gold" conference each year where they bring together top names in breastfeeding. I think it would be great to offer other conferences like this in other maternity topics, not just breastfeeding, and perhaps offer them throughout the year.

I do think that the interactive discussion ones are going to explode and become very popular, I will look into that more, I am not the most computer savvy person, so not sure if I'm up to the task of developing one, but maybe I can bribe my 20yo!

Thanks for the ideas!
