Does size matter (Gloves nurses, gloves!)

One of the things that surprises me is that I seem to be the only nurse there who is upset about this. More CNA's are vocal than the nurses. Why does everyone just accept this? I have been purchasing my own gloves in a size large and I turned my notice in. I don't feel like this is anywhere I want to spend any significant amount of time.

Thank you for the website Mcnasty. I filed a complaint on my break.

**Update** Spoke to management...they told me that supplying the gloves is a courtesy and that if I require special gloves I can supply them myself just like my stethoscope and scrubs. They said there is no law that requires them to provide us with gloves. Not sure where to go from here, working on updating my resume.

    Reasons nurses get fired

As far as what to tell new employers. Tell them that you were terminated after self reporting a med error. Tell them that you deeply regret making the error, that the patient was not adversely effected but even though you were terminated you believe in honesty and integrity and would not change the fact that you self reported even though it ended up with your termination. Most nurses will understand. You can even tell them you learned something from it, like to triple check the mar or whatever would have helped you not to make the error. Best of luck, let go, move on!

Yes, you accurately describe my dilemma. I am going to talk to admin but if they are unwilling to provide gloves I will have to find other work. Next job interview when they ask if I have any questions....I will be asking about the gloves!

Does size matter (Gloves nurses, gloves!)

I wish there were a law about this, but I have been unable to find one. According to the facility I should just wear the extra large.

I am glad you succeeded. I just wish facilities would realize that they have to provide the tools that allow us to do a good job. Not sure if I will stay at this job or not. Planning on requesting gloves in all sizes but purchasing my own right now.

Does size matter (Gloves nurses, gloves!)

I do PRN nursing work. Recently a facility I work at has gone to only purchasing medium and xtra large gloves and the cheap ones with no stretch at that! My problem is I have large hands. I usually wear a large glove. I can fit a medium in a nice stretch glove like the blue nitrile gloves but in the food service type, white/clear gloves this facility provides tear when I try to put a medium on and the xtra large are bulky and I fear not protective due to the open area at the wrist. I am planning on bringing this up as an infection control issue with my boss. What are your feelings about this? Have you ever run across this issue? How did or would you handle this?

    DNR care questions

I wanted to thank everyone who responded to my question. I read all of your responses and have put them to work. I have had to handle 2 deaths with DNR patients and have been able to respond effectively and responsibly!

Anyone every work 24 hours a week? (2 12s) is it doable?

I like working 2 - 12's. I feel more like I have a life now. Time to spend with family and also time to recover from job stresses!

    Is this normal??!?!

Nervousness and excitement are almost one and the same. I know this from being a new nurse. I would almost make my self sick at work every shift. Then I started changing the way I thought about it. Instead of looking at new experiences as fear I looked at them in excitement and anticipation of what I could learn from them. I made sure I sought out as much instruction about a new task from a charge nurse or mentor and then I would change the fear in my brain to excitement about trying something new. Yes, you are normal!

I was slapped by a patient

Glad your outcome was better, mine made me bitter.

I was slapped by a patient

To all the people who say to report this to law enforcement - in most cases they will not do anything about it and administration will not either. Unfortunately it has become acceptable in our society to assault nurses. I have personally been assaulted twice on the job and have had coworkers assaulted and no one I know was able to file any police charges or get any action from hospital administration. Even going to the police station to press charges ourselves was met with no action by police. After I was physically assaulted and reported it, I was assigned to take care of the same patient the very next day. I had to work the entire 12 hour shift afraid of my patient and after that I resigned and I will not work as a hospital nurse anymore.
