    New teachers & student privacy

Hi all, I'm a new nurse starting my first full year as a school nurse (last year I came in January) and my administration is asking me to do some inservice with the faculty. They want me to specifically review with teachers the importance of protecting the privacy of students health and medical information. Other than the "Captain Obvious" answers... 1. Don't discuss with other teachers 2. Don't discuss with other students 3. Don't leave documents laying around/exposed What other suggestions would you offer? It is a public school so FERPA is the law/guidelines we follow. Thanks. Thanks, UB

Clinic Rules- Do you have them posted?

Hi, does anyone have clinic rules (expectations) posted in their clinic? I'm a new school nurse but I'm a former teacher. I know the job descriptions & settings are very different but after my first 3 days I noticed that a lot of the middle school students need reminders about behaviors as they enter the clinic. Any feed back is welcomed.

    New Grad- 1st Job advice

@Tattooed_LPN2b Hi, the school nurse job is Monday-Friday and its 40 hours per week at roughly $14 per hour. The home health job right now is one client that I see every Friday and Saturday night for a skilled nursing visit which lasts about an hour and it pays $22 per visit.

    What Supplies Are Needed/Recommended?

Hi, I am new and that's why I am inquiring. I'm doing skilled nursing with this one client that I have been assigned. I know not to check BG without orders but in school was trained to check pulse ox for all patients as apart of taking vitals. I admit that I am new to this and I'm still learning. My staffing agency didn't provide me with anything. Nada... Zip... Zero... The nurse that I oriented with for this client told me that she provides her own because they weren't provided. She literally brings her own gloves, hand sanitizer, thermometer, etc. I specifically asked did he have these items on hand. The only thing my client has is his own Accu check but his wife checks his BG before I arrive for my skilled nursing visit.

    Liability Insurance

Thank you for the information. There is an RN on staff that overseas the cases. Right now I've accepted only on client. They had me fill out paperwork for Employer Tax ID # but then in additional paperwork it said that they don't take out taxes and it would be my responsibilty to file.

    What Supplies Are Needed/Recommended?

Hi, I'm a new LPN starting my first job as a contract, PRN home health nurse. I have one client so far. There is no stock supply of items such as gloves, thermometer probe covers or alcohol wipes, etc... we provide everything for ourselves. What supplies do you recommended keeping a stock pile of in my car... Just incase the client doesn't already have supplies? I know that I need the basics... Stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, digital thermometer & probe covers, alcohol wipes, gloves, hand sanitizer, accu check machine (maybe if client doesnt have one), hand-held pulse oximeter, etc... Any other suggestions? Thanks

    Liability Insurance

Hi I'm a new LPN starting 2 new jobs... One as a school nurse and the other as a contract, PRN home health nurse via a staffing agency. The HH job is contract; therefore, there are no benefits, no liability insurance, no nothing... Any suggestions for inexpensive liability insurance? Thanks

    New Grad- 1st Job advice

I see its different in all states. I'm in Florida. The schools in my school district hire LPNs and there is an RN that comes to the school once a week to oversee what the LPN has done, paperwork, case management, etc.

    New Grad- 1st Job advice

    New Grad- 1st Job advice

Hi Everyone, I'm a new LPN (graduated July 2015 and passed boards November 2015). I interviewed and was offered a position as a school nurse. This will be my 1st job out of school. The pay is not the best but the schedule works best as I have a school age child with special needs. I'm excited but I'm also worried because I don't want to loose my clinical skills. I want to maintain my skills so I'm considering a PRN or part-time gig so that I can stay in practice with foley, trach care, wound care, etc. Any suggestions for a PRN or part-time weekend job other than 3-11pm or 11-7am shift work at a nursing home? Thanks UB

    failed nursing school again

Hi Snowybee, I would say take sometime and reevaluate what went wrong to cause you to fail the course... if its just one course can you appeal the program? Are you trying to work and go to school at the same time? How much time do you spend studying? How many resources are you using to study? Just some things to consider when and if you decide to continue.
