Thanks for all of your responses. This whole HIPAA/FERPA thing is one of the most confusing things about being a school nurse. I get HIPAA. Throw FERPA into the mix and everything I thought I knew...
...IN my office. My roof is leaking (melting ice and snow) and water is dripping down the inside of one of my windows, off the windowsill, and onto the floor. I have chux pads all over the floor,...

My BFF is a teacher in the school where I am now employed. She had nothing to do with me getting the job, but she did tell me about the job opening as she found out the nurse before me was leaving....
In my state (Maine), there is an entirely separate provision for emergency meds, like rescue inhalers/epi-pens/glucagon. I train staff each year on the administration of these medications as well....
I agree that PRN = nursing judgement. However, I just read through my state laws again and saw no exclusion for PRN medications administered by unlicensed personnel. Not every school has a nurse...
SW = social worker (I think!) If your social worker is not trained to administer medication, then absolutely you made the right call. I looked in the rules for my state and couldn't find anything...

I think it's hard to compare the two because I was at a very different point in my life for each degree. I have an undergraduate BS in health/athletic training with an emphasis in exercise...
^^ Hmmmm.... good point!! Maybe I'm jealous you have the SPACE for 3 cots. I could fit 3 cots in my office, but I wouldn't be able to get to the bathroom, or my supply
That night shift school nurse must be bored out her mind. LOL I HATE "work" dreams. I spend enough time there while I am awake, no need to spend time there when I am asleep as

This thread is so full of snark. I love it!!! The PVT posts kill me. You can wait 2-3 days (or however long it takes- I think I found out in 2 days? Maybe 3?) to find out your results. Seriously....
I have many students come to my office c/o sore throats. I get out my trusty otoscope and shine the light in their mouths. I ask them to open wide and say "AH" which works on 98% of my students. I...
Right now I am wearing jeans and a black flowy tunic thing, with black Danskos. I am a school nurse and my wardrobe fluctuates between jeans and a nice top/blazer and scrubs. I worked at a hospital...
I am a school nurse. We carry stock epi-pens and I am covered by standing physician orders to administer an epi-pen to any individual experiencing anaphylactic symptoms in the school setting....
He refused to out at one point. Luckily the area where he does his "business" was kind of protected from the wind, but poor Milo!! Just got the announcement, we have a 1/2 day today due to an...
I jinxed myself yesterday with this thread. Student collapsed in the hall with seizure-like activity with a recent hx of these episodes. Called 911 for that one as well. I do enjoy getting to see...
Student found unresponsive on the floor in the bathroom.... one last year and once this year (same student). Called 911 both times. No dx of asthma, wheezing all over lungs, sats in low 90s, no...

Wow! Kudos to you!! Thank goodness he is OK!!! I always worry about medical histories that don't get disclosed to me for whatever reason. Like parents who check "no medical hx" but then list 14...
I live in Maine. I have no idea how much snow we actually got because the winds were so bad (my new dog, who came from Georgia, was NOT impressed!). If I had to guess I would say we got about 20...
Yep- I thought the same thing with my student- that he might be a sociopath or psychopath. I saw him a bunch of times for hand injuries from punching walls, so I knew he had the potential to be...
I had one student who gave me the heebie jeebies every time he came in my office last year. So much so that I asked our principal if there was some type of panic button I could have, in case a...
Same here!! I've actually never met our school physician. I've only been here a year and half. Apparently he has met with the other nurses, usually annually, but we never got around to meeting...
