    Interviewing the Right Way - 10 steps

    Interviewing can be hard work but so is getting the job that you thought you wanted, only for you to realize that it was not what you wanted ... not at all. So how does one prevent this waste of time, money and energy on both the parts of the interviewer and the interviewee? By bringing you to the interview...be engaged. Here are 10 steps on having an engaging interview 1. What do I hope to accomplish? Knowing the answer to this BEFORE you get to the interview is an eye-opener because it helps you determine beforehand, without any pressures, what you are willing or not willing to accept. 2. How can I sell my work experiences? You are the author of your story, so the write (or speak) your story. It is said that a story is one of the most memorable ways to be remembered, so tell the story of your work experiences and how you came to be in that interview room 3. What do I need to know about this company and position? Before going into the interview, do your research. In this days of everything being on the Internet, that is not a hard thing to do 4. How can I allay the interviewer's fears? No matter how many times an interviewer has done the process, there is still always the lingering fear of hiring a wrong fit. Once you have determined, that is a place for you, don't hesitate to allay the interviewer's fears 5. How can I stand out from other candidates? Going into that interview, you already knew that you would be in the ring with one or more other candidates, so it would make no sense to go into that interview and come out the same. Stand out 6. How do I dress for this interview? These days many people do not put much attention into how they are dressed, but not you. Because you know your worth and are a professional, you will take time to plan ahead and prepare on what outfit to wear. It does not have to be expensive but it does have to be well-pressed and coordinated is a must plus the added confidence boost it gives you. 7. How do I follow up with the interviewer? At the end of the interview, you want to be sure to collect contact information for the interviewer. It serves as one of two things- a way to express your thanks for the interview and networking opportunity to follow up at a later date, should you not get this job and something else comes up in the future. 8. How do I conclude our conversation? The end of the interview is just as important as the beginning; do not leave the conversation hanging in the air. Be a closer and close it! 9. How do I make this interview warm and memorable? Exude confidence and truly listen when the interviewer speaks. Don't be in such a haste to respond- absorb and then respond. 10. How do I come away from this interview knowing that I gave it my best shot? Take a notebook with you- writes notes, highlight important facts, check off what you have discussed and do a quick mental review to be sure that both you and the interviewer come away satisfied. Lastly, be sure to ask questions of the interviewer as they do of you. You are equally there to vet them and see if the company and position is one that you would enjoy working at. Go ace your next interview!

    Thank you, Commuter. But nowhere in your original post was this stated or referenced. This conversation would not have happened had that been the case. As a precautionary advice; if you did not see it, if it did not happen to you directly, then you cannot "speak" as though it did. It is a dishonest and misleading thing to do. It is very acceptable to write from your point of view though and thanks for sourcing out your reference:yes:

    @ The Commuter, I love your posts, I really do. But it does irk me a bit when you write posts from a third person view with such certainty. Did either of these ladies leave a suicide note? No one will ever know why they did what they did. All the occurrences that happened leading to their untimely deaths were all circumstantial. We can all assume as you have done, that these must have factored in, but we cannot say with CERTAINTY (as you have done), that they did. Again, I love your posts but saying tings with certainty as a third party, when you had no way of knowing what really occurred can be considered a tad bit misleading.

    No apologies needed. If my post came across wrong to you, that was not intended in any way. I thought about putting in a smiley face to lessen any offense you might take but decided against it. We don't KNOW that the student "skated away". For all we know, she might have received some sort of punishment (hopefully).

    And in that definition, you are completely right. But please tell us, how Toni's over-sharing of information equate to her lousy and inappropriate behavior which ended up getting her terminated? She was culpable to the latter and not as a result of her over sharing tendencies.

    In bringing back focus to this discussion, the thread is titled, "Do not over-share", putting Toni in focus here. Several things got them to that point- the student dropped the ball for not giving her medications as at when due; the instructor for not checking up on her student and Toni for not following up, for ultimately, the patient was hers. The bone of contention here, is the way that the picture was painted of Toni parting ways from the company. It seemingly appears she was let go because of her tendency to over share information when in fact, she was let go, because of lousy and inappropriate behavior.

    Wow!Just wow! I am completely shocked @Commuter. That was a total misrepresentation of facts.Toni was insubordinate. Bipolar disorder did not get Toni fired. Loose lips did not get Toni fired. Insubordination got Toni fired!Entirely different things...

    You call it candor? That was too much information that didn't need sharing in a workplace environment. The revelation of her "bipolar disorder" was the concrete reason for management to part ways with her. Might make one wonder what she shared with her patients. If it was that easy for her coworkers to turn on her, they must not have really liked her in the first place.

    That must be some "dramatic license";the intent was the implied. You took it at face value because it is not a given expectation that you would perceive a different meaning from what the OP originally implied. But the OP did clarify in later posts though.

    Awesome response to the OP.There seemed to be a lot of adrenaline as should be expected in a situation like that. And other well intentioned have already pointed out helpful suggestions.I am guessing pregnancy probably added more to an already pumped up situation. Under your very capable hands, you gave a family a chance to be together for longer:yes: Quick question though, was this seizure sudden or did the patient's diagnoses possibly give an indication of such?

    Our finances are mostly decided by the choices we choose to make or not. You do not have to be a Wall Street guru (this is also debatable!) or a whiz kid to understand that if you spend way above your income, you stand a greater risk of falling into debt and other financial messes. Some situations are simply unavoidable on how one can get into a financial mess (think hospital fees related to lack of insurance or bankruptcy from staggering hospital fees!) and yet others are consciously made with or without thoughts to the long term effects of those decisions. Some risk factors that can tip you into a financial mess School Loans If you decide to pick an Ivy League school for nursing (laughable) or an especially exorbitant one, then please do be prepared to pay the piper when it comes to time to pay the school loan. Except those schools come with a sure guarantee of a job offer after school, it would be your best bet to pick a better affordable school and network like craz before graduation. By all means, do go to that accelerated school, just try and make sure that that expensive accelerated school is at least accredited. Why spend so much money and still have limitations at picking a place of employment?Not a good investment! Mortgage Please explain to me again how a five bedroom house with two and a half baths (with the white picket fence) is the right choice to make for a family of three? Things add up. When you begin to pay for space (or things) you do not need, you take away from saving up for things you do need. Latest Tech gadgets Apple Air is all well and good. Iphone 6 or is it 7? No wait, its 8! Is even more better, but have you checked how much those run and the contract agree you have to add up along with that. Constant eating -outs (self-explanatory) Garage Sale Out with the old, in with the new! All the time? No you do not need to offload all your clothes from last summer to make new ones for next summer. Pick and choose. You don't always have to follow ALL the latest fashion trends. Reducing these risk factors Scholarships/ Tuition Reimbursements There are a plethora of funds out there, take advantage of them. Write that essay if that is what it takes you to get some finances towards covering some school expenses. Keep your grades up (high school students!). Be frugal No, you do not NEED the latest model of the Jaguar. Get yourself, a dependable Honda Accord or whatever else it is that runs well, is good on gas and still looks great, like new. Cook in! This might be tricky for some, but have you ever stopped once to tally how much of your spending goes on constant eat-outs? A lot! Learn to cook and have fun with it. Buy basics and staples and play with it, YouTube it, if you like. It's amazing what comes up on You Tube. Save some money while you are at it and know what goes into your meals. SAVE! Find a way of paying yourself, it could be automatic payments so you have no idea when it gets taken out, much less painful that way. Save for the rainy day Get some financial literacy "I don't know" is no excuse. Find out and then transfer/instill these good habits into your kids. Share your helpful tips & what has worked for you.

    Nursing is NOT a martyrdom. Nursing is a profession. No, nurses with the right qualifications do NOT have to wait to go up in ranks. They earned it and they GET to keep it. The cold hard truth is that nursing is NOT charity At least, not all of the time The hospitals provide care and expect to be rewarded for their efforts...in cash. Granted there are cases of overkill As is in every other profession Nursing/Healthcare is a business. A cold hard truth is that in business you do not get what you deserve; you get what you negotiate Change is the only constant in life; times as you knew it have changed. And so must we! As change agents and nursing professionals, we must be willing to adapt and make the best out of a situation. That is what fighting people do! So fight! We do not push back against a tidal wave; we find ways to best it and make it work for us. That is clear-cut "politics".

    I very much agree with you on financial management being taught in schools (high-school) to colleges, I am also of the mindset that parents can make a positive attempt in modelling the behavior to kids. I also understand that some parents don't have that opportunity either hence school comes in. Whatever the case may be, financial management is of the essence.

  17. I am sure that I am not alone in having had pure evil thoughts about "A.P.A" format. What is this APA format, you ask! This so well-loved format that could be the determining factor between a passing or failing grade. If you have ever heard the saying, "crying more than the bereaved", then you have successfully described the APA in nursing. Nursing schools took APA from the original initiator and simply ran with it.APA is to nursing school, what water is to fish; one crazy love! It was hammered into our skulls, we were terrorized with it. It simply HAD to be the APA format. You were often judged more by your APA format than the contents of the paper. Wrenching! (Show of virtual hands) Can one nurse, just one, say that she has EVER used APA format in the care of his/her patients? I did not think so. It was sad but funny really, how instructors went on about APA format. They did not go on and on about the possible toxic environment nursing could be. They did not tell you life experiences and how it could be applicable to yours in the real world. They mostly told you about APA format and how you could write an article or publish a journal in the far off future. Teacher, please! I just wanted to pass the course first! My thoughts? If I ever got to the point of writing or wanting to write an article, then I should be able to research the correct format with the plethora of resources available to me or heck, I should hope the book publisher has a credible editor to do that! It has been years later, but I still burn at the wasted efforts of APA and the disservice being done to nursing students. You are only to follow rules, never questioning, especially when your questions are contrary to the general consensus. Be a "sheeple" (SHEEp+ peoPLE)by all means, always following, never questioning. Then how do people learn? Where is the buy in? If people know nursing for what it is and is not, then they are better able to make informed decisions and can avoid potential career disasters early enough. But I digress! The constant hammering on APA format is not helpful to anyone. By all means, introduce and teach the "subject" and then be done with it. Do not go hammering on it as is currently done. Teach the important things like work conditions, burn out environment, coworker conflicts and possible solutions along with course work. Make nursing education more meaningful to the student, enough with the constant harping on APA format. Enough, we say! Please critique this article. Be gentle but real.

    Nursing: A Broader Perspective

    After having come across several reasons as to why there is low morale in nursing, I felt that I should pen this down. Have a pleasant read! Your expectations? Some people come into nursing with unhealthy expectations of what the profession can and should do for them. Understand something, nursing like any other is a profession. It would not provide for you what you don't already have (inner peace and fulfillment). It has neither intrinsic nor extrinsic powers in itself. You should have your intrinsic motivations or failing that some sort of extrinsic motivations- don't fop it all on nursing. That's where the unhealthy expectations begin. Nursing is a Profession And with all other professions, expect a downturn or an upturn. Set realistic expectations. Don't believe the hype that you would get out of school and barrel into your desired specialty. By all means, do have a positive outlook but temper it with realism. Show flexibility and willingness to chart a different course to your desired goal. Altruism? No, nursing is not all altruistic. Do not feel bad when some try to make it seem so. It is first a profession and you follow those guidelines to the fullest and render the best services that you humanly can within your capacity to do so. Some people are very fortunate to have nursing as their life's calling. Don't feel bad if it's not yours; just do your job pretty darn well. Nursing is for females? No. Nursing is a field which just happens to be dominated by females. It is open to both males and females and the strength (and humor!) provided by males is always welcome and can come in pretty handy. Nursing as a fulfillment? No. Fulfillment comes from within (introverts, this is your turf!). Not just with nursing alone, but with all other careers/professions, if you do not have fulfillment by self, do not expect nursing to give it to you. Rather, what that might do is compound an already bad situation. Find your inner peace, and then be satisfied with nursing. Hate nursing now but will like it later? Your gut feeling is almost always correct. If you hate nursing at the onset, chances are that you might not get to love it. You will learn to tolerate it though and possibly even fake it till you believe it. But a career should not be a shackle; you should have some joy doing what you love. Perhaps nursing might be the stepping stone to what you really want to do... (at least it will help pay the bills till you decide). Find a Release "When you stop growing, you start dying" Have a life as much as you reasonably can outside of nursing. The reason some people can tolerate some of the things they do, is because they have an expectation, something they look forward to...a release system. Imagine, three days (or five days) of work and then I get to do what I love! Exhilarating! Stay Challenged Whether through nursing or otherwise find ways to constantly learn. Stay on top of things as much as you can and when an opportunity comes and if you can, take it. Network Six degrees of separation. Find ways to network, at events at hospital gatherings, with visitors ... A smile and a curious mind go a long way. Personal Branding Forget about the hospital branding. What's your personal brand? Every time you step away from people, you leave an impression (your brand). Your brand is what you make of it, it can either build you up or tear you down. You decide. In conclusion, some are in a very happy place and have nursing as their life's joy, other's are not, but it shouldn't end there- you can take a not-so-pleasant situation and find some good in it. You just have to show up first!
