    Was It Worth It?

Would I do this over again? Heck yeah! I love being a nurse. I would have, however, saved myself some student loan debt by going to a local junior college and getting my Associate's in nursing. I went straight to a 4 year university, graduated with a Bachelor's in Health Science, then went back to get my ADN. Now I'm in school for my BSN. I guess I just can't stay away from a classroom lol.

Do RNs get extra pay for working with students?

It's not? I beg to differ. A large part of what we do is teach. I hope you're referring to teaching students.

NS and kiddos/how to get any studying done?

Studying with little ones around is NOT an easy thing to do. I started nursing school with a 2 (almost 3) year old and I was pregnant with my second child. My oldest never gave me problems so the first semester was easy to conquer. I delivered my second child during the first week of second semester and went back to class 6 days later. THANK GOD my newborn was a champ at switching from boob to bottle and sleeping through the night because I had to do a lot of handing her off to my husband or my mom so that I could get work done. It was difficult (physically and emotionally) and there were times I had to stay up really late to get things done. Many times, I would take all my study materials to Panera or Barnes and Noble to get away from the chaos of everyone needing me at home. Doing well in nursing school with little ones at home is not easy but it can be done with enough support and self-discipline. I made it through without repeating any semesters and you can too. Oh, and remember to make time to love on your babies every chance you get! Good luck to you!

Poll: Nurse and law enforcement couples

Oooh, if that would have happened to me when I was young and single, I would have taken him up on his offer if he was cute! I would just make sure to let a close friend (or two) know where I was.

Can I get a job in California ?

Atherton is a beautiful area. The cost of living is off the hook but you'll be in the middle of good schools and beautiful scenery. I used to work in that area until about 7 months ago and the best places to look for work are with Stanford Medical Center and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF). The Caltrain is not too far so you could take it to work at one of the big hospitals in the San Francisco or San Jose also. Traffic is A HOT MESS out there so take that into consideration when you consider your daily commute. Good luck with your search!

What's the meanest thing a patient has said to you?

The most offensive thing I've heard was not really directed towards me but it still hurt my feelings. This happened when I was a young CNA working in LTC about 15 years ago. We had the sweetest resident who always spoke with a soft, southern accent. I loved her! Well she developed a UTI and shingles at the same time. Another CNA and I were attempting to get this pt out of bed to change her linen and she was a little weak that morning. So on the third attempt to help her stand, she yelled "BE EASY!!! YOU GUYS ARE ARE PUSHING ME AROUND LIKE I'M SOME N****R!!!" I was shocked because this pt knew me very well but I'm not sure she knew I was Black. She was also pretty sick and that tends to make normal people act looney. I didn't hold it against her and she was back to her sweet self by the next time I worked with her.

    Hourly Pay in Bay Area

I have a friend who works as an advice nurse in the east bay and makes $87 an hour at Kaiser. She has about 2 years experience as an LVN and 2 years as an RN. Cost of living is typically higher in many parts of the bay but not in all areas. If you can find a cheaper place to live (think east Contra Costa County) then it's totally worth it and the money is awesome!

Kaiser Advice Nurses: Do any of you work from home?

There is a series of phone interviews and computer tests you have to pass. I think we are all still waiting to hear when we will be scheduled for the final on site interview.
