NVCC Class of 2013 Meet and Greet + Q&A

Hey! I'm loving all these NVCC Nursing class threads and facebooks! :) Name: Kaitlin (or Katie) Years at NVCC: 2 Joined the FBook Group: Yes! Track: Traditional Career Goal: RN Planning to Transfer: Yes, Mason's RN-BSN program, planning a double major in AS General Studies along with the AAS Nursing degree to make myself more competitive when I apply to Mason (kind of like making up my own Momentum 2 +1, except it'll be more than 3 years, lol) Classes Completed: ENG 111, NAS 161/162, SDV 101, PSY 201/202, ART 101, HLT 141, CST 229, HLT 250, ASL 101/102, SPA 101/102, HLT 220, and in the next few weeks I will have BIO 141/142, ITE 115, MTH 151, and PHI 227 completed! About me: I'm 20 years old, will turn 21 in the middle of the Fall semester. I am not married and I do not have any children, but I do have a boyfriend of 2+ years. For the longest time I can remember wanting to work in a professional health setting. My grandma always told me I'd make a great nurse and I've always wanted to be one. Honestly, I am a little intimidated by people who already have their foot in the door in the healthcare setting because I have zilch formal/professional experience in that arena. But I look forward to gaining that experience and this entire journey! @Carolyn: I am under the impression that we must buy their specific scrubs, so when we go out to do clinicals, people recognize us as students. Not sure about the shoes though. I can't wait for the Blackboard Orientation site to be available, I think I will be able to sleep a little more easy at night knowing some of the answers to the questions we all still obviously have!

Acceptance to NVCC Fall 2011 Program!!!

I got in, too!!! Congratulations to everyone else! I saw that you all got your letters so I ran upstairs and asked my mom if she checked the mail today and she hadn't yet so I grabbed the mailbox key and literally sprinted down the street in the rain to the mailbox haha. See you all at orientation!

I noticed the AAS in Nursing thing, too, on my degree progress report. And like you all, I can't remember if it was there before or not! AAHHHH...lol I'm happy to know that we are not all alone :)

Acceptance to NVCC Fall 2011 Program!!!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one without anything listed under "My Organizations! haha But at the same time, I just want to know now!! I'm getting more and more anxious as the minutes pass! And I've heard the same thing about classes, too- we'll be eligible to sign up for them later on in the summer. BUT I've also heard that they assign classes and clinicals for us..? I'm not sure either way..

NVCC pre-reqs-which classes are you taking?

NVCC is willing to squeeze every dime out of you that they can. I haven't done either yet (seek division approval or take any chem classes) I'm taking BIO 142 the second 6 weeks this summer. I've already taken NAS 161/162. The only reason I'm taking BIO 141/142 and the Micro is because NAS 161/162 doesn't transfer ANYWHERE (trust me, I've looked)! I'm hoping the division can just let me skip CHM 111/112 since I've already been introduced to some micro when I took NAS 161/162.

NVCC Nursing Fall 2012 Waiting to Hear

Really?! Oh my goodness! Where did you hear that, GCW? I remember the letter I got about the acknowledgment of my application saying that at the earliest, we'd hear two weeks after the application deadline. I didn't realize it'd only be a day after. I hope you're right. I keep having dreams about getting my letter or seeing the magical link under "My Organizations" on blackboard hahaha

NVCC Nursing Fall 2012 Waiting to Hear

I finished all my pre-/co-requisites in the Spring 2010 semester. The only thing that kept me from applying last year was the TEAS test. I passed the reading/writing portions with no problem but I hadn't taken a math since high school so I didn't do so well on that and had to retake it again. Unfortunately it was too late for me to try to retake it before the deadline last year. I heard about that rumor as well. I was actually reading threads/posts on this site from people that were in our position last year and I came across that so I've been checking "My Organizations", too.

NVCC Nursing Fall 2012 Waiting to Hear

I'm waiting with you!! Geez, I've been waiting since February of this year for the May 27 application deadline to pass so I can start the official countdown. I don't think I can handle another week of waiting- especially since they say at LEAST 2 weeks after May 27 is when we can expect to hear something. I'm so anxious to hear something! Anyways, best of luck to you and the rest of the applicants. It sounds like, if anybody, you deserve it!

OR.. I also so that you could get divisional approval, so maybe you could just try to talk to the head of the division and they can let you skip the chem and go straight for the micro

NVCC pre-reqs-which classes are you taking?

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean. I didn't know you had to take 2 semesters of chem before micro.. that is kind of annoying. But on the other side of the coin, I'm sure general college chem can/will transfer anywhere (unlike the NAS 161/162). So you could use it as a general elective or something like that.

NVCC pre-reqs-which classes are you taking?

Honestly, if I were you I would do the BIO 141/142 + Micro route because I took NAS 161/162 before I decided I wanted to eventually get my BSN so now I'm playing catch up and squeezing BIO 141/142 into my schedule this summer so those credits can transfer over later. It may seem like a bit more work, but it'll be worth it. I wish I had someone tell me to do this before because I feel like I wasted $800+ on NAS 161/162 just to find out no one else accepts those credits. Plus, NVCC counselors are almost no help at all.
  13. Okay, thanks for the advice! I appreciate it :)
  14. Thanks for pointing that out, I guess I never thought about it that way, haha! The program I have applied to does let you have summers off (phew!). First semester is 11 credits of core nursing classes, second semester is 8, third semester is 9, and fourth semester is 13. I'm kind of a control freak so I made a sample schedule of what the next two years might look like (lol) and I've made it so that, besides the nursing courses, I will take 1-2 GenEd class (depending on the credits of the core nursing classes) and I am already going to school full-time this summer (15 credits) as well as 13 credits next summer. I also forgot to mention that I am going for an AS in General Studies because there is an agreement between my community college and most other schools in VA that guarantees admission if you have an AS/AA in General Studies and an awesome GPA, haha.

    Discouraged

Does your school allow you to take half semester courses? If it does, I would definitely try that! But I'd warn you.. it is a half semester course and you end up jam-packing a whole semester's worth of information into half the time. If you are disciplined enough to do that, go for it! You will be eligible to apply a lot sooner if you do that with the courses you need. Good luck!!
  16. Hey all, I'm new to this forum so please let me know if I should redirect this question to another area on the site. Back in February I applied to a 2 year Associate's program for Fall 2011 entry (still won't here anything until the middle of June). If I get in, what is the maximum amount of credits per semester you'd recommend while in nursing school? I've finished all of my pre-requisites as well as co-requisites but this past semester I decided I will go for my BSN (RN-BSN program at a local university) after I complete my 2 year degree; The extra classes I would be picking up are relevant to the RN-BSN program I wish to apply to. I am a young student with no obligations to children or a husband. And if I do wind up picking up some extra classes, I will more than likely quit my job and focus on school. Any and all advice is welcome! Thanks in advance for your advice :)
