  1. They won't stop calling me!

Sorry but maybe it's because I don't work in the States or understand the term 'special corporate training' - but unless the terms of this person's contract has been changed to include a statement that this training entails ad lib on-call work, I mos...
  2. They won't stop calling me!

ooops - that was DON'T mean to be rude, sorry! :-)
  3. They won't stop calling me!

Sorry mean to be rude, but sorry - don't really like the dishonesty that this kinda approach demands... I think a previous post is more correct. Just say no. You clearly don't have any feeling that you owe them anything (so ask yourself where is this...
  4. Does anyone enjoy nursing?

I love being a nurse more now (after some nearly 30 years doing it) than I ever have! The organisational/political nonsense goes on as it always has - never enough money, nurse education is not what it used to be, etc, etc... but I can honestly say ...
  5. Hi fellow nurses. I'm a Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) in Mental Health in a major Australian hospital in Melbourne. For many years now I have felt frustrated by what seems to me to be a loss of direction for nurses. I completed my degree course in...
  6. Visitors chasing you down the hallway....

and then, of course, there's always the other extreme... i would probably have been written up here, too - we're all likely to be a little bit less assertive and more instructive with expletives under certain conditions!!! :-)
  7. Visitors chasing you down the hallway....

sadly, in my experience, it's the patients who have been patient and had the call-light ignored for sometimes hours at a time that then learn that the only way they can get the help they need is to follow or come looking for nurses and 'harrass' them...
  8. Time to call a duck a duck?

for me, for us to understand the alleged 'need' for doctors orders it may be beneficial to have a look at the patriarchal history of health care. once upon a time the breed we call 'men' (of which i am one) ruled the world. only men could do many, ...
  9. Time to call a duck a duck?

i guess i see our practice as collaborative more than by instruction. when my best fried was terminally ill with cancer, had had her catheter removed too early and was backing up with retained urine, leaking, distressed, in pain etc... the consultan...
  10. Not giving PRN's even though they are ordered?

not sure how it works where you are but here in our psych ward prn medications can only be given if the prescribing clinician has completed the "indications" section of the med. chart - - in other words, if they have detailed the specific conditions ...
  11. Not giving PRN's even though they are ordered?

just a thought here, i understand the rationale behind knowing more about a patients condition and connecting this with our practice, but do you realise that you denied the patient the relief they needed and potentially caused her to suffer an increa...
  12. quote] i say nursing hates itself because since i have been alive the ana has had as a position that lpn's and adn's should not be considered nurses. and now that there are so many direct entry msn programs around maybe even a bsn is not good enough ...
  13. Time to call a duck a duck?

I'm of the opposing opinion that those of us that see ourselves as professionals and consistently BEHAVE in that manner will be viewed as professionals. Those of us that don't... won't! And ultimately I believe more and more nurses are seeing themsel...
  14. Time to call a duck a duck?

Yes, I do believe you're wrong and here's why - in very short, succinct sentences. 1. Unique body of knowledge: yes, nursing has this. how else did it get to be a doctorate subject? You're trying to tell us all those academics all over the world ar...
  15. @ I'mThatGuy - Maybe it's because I work in mental health that I have such a strong reaction to someone saying the medical model works. It doesn't. It is illness focussed. Good mental health care is about knowing how the brain works and that is, b...
  16. As someone who does both, I totally concur with your comments - AND I realise that there are times and situations where I will write as I text! I don't think that's necessarily the reasons for the non responses, so many people will write this way th...
  17. Trying to choose Nursing or Counseling

Hi figuringitout09 Just my two-halfpenny worth - I have been a nurse for many years in Mental Health. I trained back in the 80's and went straight into psychiatry and have been happily MH nursing for the last 31 years. My rationale for your decision...
  18. The Problem with Nursing

Hi Sarjasi There's much that I could take exception to in your post, but others have already done that and the bottom line is that your experience is what it is. We can't (and shouldn't) argue with you, simply because of course, it's real to you. I'...
