  1. How would you handle it if you knew a co-worker was very lax in using Universal Precautions?
  2. Why Even go for your MA? Don't Understand...

MA's can take various types of classes. An associates degree requires two years of college. But in the working world, it rarely matters if an MA has a CMA, RMA or AD. The only times these really come into play is if they are working in hospital or...
  3. Universal Precautions are not optional...

I have to disagree. If a nurse is not practicing Universal Precautions...which EVERYONE is taught ad nauseum in school...then it is unlikely that they would be fastidious about hand washing. So therefore they ARE indeed putting the patient at risk f...
  4. Should I make a switch??

Nursing is a forever profession. There will always be a demand.
  5. I keep getting hugged

I work in Peds so I get hugged all the time by the little people! I luv it! :redpinkhe
  6. Why Even go for your MA? Don't Understand...

As an MA I would love to chime in on this topic. Many valid reasons have been cited already. For me, 25 years ago, I did not have the money to attend "nursing school". So I opted to get my foot in the door by attending an MA program through a priv...
  7. Learn To Say It Correctly!!

I worked with an older doctor who could never say Parietal correctly. He would say it as "peri-eat-al". Drove me nuts.
  8. OK...so to what extreme do you go when your shift is done to eliminate taking anything home with you? I am a bit OCD in this department. I change my shoes when I get to my car and only wear my "work shoes" for work. I don't want anything getting ...
  9. Private Rooms Standard

How many of you agree that private rooms should be standard across the board? Not only does multiple patient rooms violate HIPAA laws, it is dangerous. Cross contamination is greater in a shared room as are other safety issues. In a local facility ...
  10. Jehovah's Witness nurses in the critical care unit?

Since that is the case, I would urge any of you interested in knowing the TRUTH about what this religion believes and how it may impact the job performance of a nurse, to do research and speak to those actual members of the faith instead of relying o...
  11. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

    That appalls me too.
  12. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

Are you advocating the practice of allowing babies and small children to crawl around on a hospital floor? I think you need to go back to public health and epidemiology 101
  13. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

I have to wonder, if you are lax with your personal cleanliness, what are you passing from patient to patient? Scary. It's no wonder things get spread thru a whole floor. In our facility, if a patient has cdiff or MRSA, in addition to gowning, glov...
  14. Jehovah's Witness nurses in the critical care unit?

I see alot of you who don't feel she should work ICU because of the nature of work involved but still encourage her to explore other opportunities in nursing. Awesome! As for me, I would do what I could to work harmoniously with a coworker who felt u...
  15. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

Speaking of babies...is anyone else appalled by the people who let their babies crawl around on the hospital floor!!!??? I mean seriously...what is wrong with people?!
  16. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

Yep...a Germaphobe and proud of it! :) As for "olden days"...they didn't have nearly the amount of disease OR knowlege of them that we have today.
  17. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

Wooh...I guess we all just have to do what we feel is best. :) Good luck.
  18. There is always a chance you got a faulty syringe. But as far as tensing up goes, I usually give the injection site a quick flick before I administer the meds. This catches the pt offguard and they instinctively untense because of the distraction.
  19. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

Those of you who don't shower after work or change clothes, I have to wonder what school you went to. This was basic technique in my class. It was drilled into us by our lab/clinicals instructor. We spent a good amount of time on proper hand washing,...
  20. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

    Pepper...actually, I have a work only coat. :)
  21. IM injections

So then does the "evidence" support any ideology that aspirating causes any harm? No? Then I think I'll continue on as is.
  22. Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!

I think what grosses me out the most is that I know of other nurses and docs who don't think twice about this issue. I remember when my daughter was a baby, I would pick her up from daycare and drive home. She would sit in her little carrier until I...
  23. Are nurses smarter than resident physicians?

I have had several instances where a resident was completely unprepared or experienced with a situation. I've shown them how to give injections, how to figure out dosing, how to perform a throat culture, how to suture and even how to remove an impac...
  24. IM injections

20 some odd years ago I was taught to ALWAYS aspirate for blood. I don't know that I could even attempt to retrain myself to do otherwise. In my opinion, regardless of the "data"...its just good practice.
