AMNP at UAB Summer 2011 Applications

AUtiger, Thanks so much for the information! My daughter will decide after this semester what she shall pursue at Auburn. The program at UAB looks like a real option for her, especially since we are Birmingham based! She loves Auburn and will hate to leave if she is not accepted into Nursing school there and may pursue a Child development degree in which she was working towards a minor. However, the nursing program is soooo competitive, I wonder if she would have a better chance of of admission at UAB. The 3.2 GRE waiver is a great option and would be possible for her! Thank you so much for the email address! We may contact you if we have more questions. After these posts, I checked the UAB website again - is it my imagination or did they use to have a 2nd degree BSN program which they no longer offer?

AMNP at UAB Summer 2011 Applications

Congrats to all of you accepted to this program! I graduated from UAB years ago and had a great experience. I know this is a bit off topic, but I was wondering if any of you would be willing to provide any admission info about this program. I currently have a daughter at Auburn looking to get into Nursing. Due to the extreme competitive nature of Auburn's program, we are looking into all options. I was thinking after Auburn, she may finish the pre-reqs at Jeff State, but was wondering if this will hurt her, not taking them at UAB? Additionally, is any undergrad degree acceptable or do they give preference to science degrees? Does admission require her to take the GRE or Teas (What are these)? Lastly, what GPA are they looking at? Science GPA or Undergrad? Any information is GREATLY appreciated! I also have lived in Birmingham all my life. The Homewood area is probably the closest area - especially for those with families looking for a good school system. Vestavia, Hoover, Oak Mountain, and Mountain Brook are equally good, just a little farther out.

    USA Accelerated Program Spring 2011

I would be interested in knowing how competitive this program is. What exactly are they basing admission on? Mostly science courses? Interview? Any information is appreciated!

dhellwege, Thank you for the information. I would appreciate any thing else you may have to add. Did many students actually drop out of the program? Which classes are the most difficult? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Aspiring Nurse Looking to Volunteer

I know Children's Hospital of Alabama has a organized volunteer program. My D talked with them about this program last spring but missed the deadline for applying. She may look into it this summer. Check their website under the volunteer tab.

Augustnurse, I am sorry to hear of your experience at UAB. I honestly don't know what to say, but wish you luck in finding a job. I would like to hear from other recent grads or students at UAB also. Augustnurse, please continue to post and update us on your situation. One other topic in your post interested me. Do nursing schools actually provide prep for the Nursing Boards these days? We were totally on our own when I graduated. They supposedly prepared us but not prepped us. It just struck me as odd that the school would actually provide a prep class.

Symphie, Congratulations on your acceptance at UAB! I admire you for following your dream. I hope that you receive the education you are looking for at UAB. I would hope you will continue to post on this board for those of us still seeking information. In regards to the posts regarding UAB by augustnurse, I would specifically like to hear what Symphie's experience is at UAB. Reading these posts about UAB are disturbing. I would be interested to hear from other recent graduates. Additionally, I would be interested on how your fellow classmates fare at AUM, if you have any information from them. Good Luck and please continue to keep us updated. If you need information on the Birmingham area, please let me know.

Augustnurse, Could you clarify "it sucked?" Are you referring to the quality of your education? What were you comparing it to? I graduated from UABSON in the late 1980s. I transferred from Alabama because of the quality of the program at UAB was better. I have always felt that I received a great education. My friend that attended nursing school at Auburn had difficulty with the board exam. My, how things have changed. The School of Nursing did not help me secure a job, but I was quickly hired at UAB. I believe that the nursing field is just saturated now, unlike when I entered the job market in the 1980's. Do you feel that if you had a degree from Bama or Auburn you would have better luck with obtaining a job? Did any of your friends secure jobs at UAB? It would seem they would give a slight preference to their own graduates. Any other information on the reputation of UAB's Nursing School would be appreciated. I would still be interested in any information on Samford's School of Nursing also.

Sympie, Thanks so much for the advice. Would you please post how it goes with UAB? I am a former UAB School of Nursing graduate and would love to see my daughter attend there. I am just curious where the bar is set for their admissions. However, she loves Auburn and I think she may decide to pursue another degree such as a Human Sciences degree in Child Life. I am not really sure what job opportunities are available with this degree but it sure seems popular at Auburn. Many of the classes will transfer so thats another benefit. If she chose to do this, I assume she could then apply to UAB or Samford's 2nd degree BSN program. Does anyone know if they are any less competitive? She would already have the sciences completed. It would be a long road and a lot of money, especially if she chose Samford! Good Luck to you! Whatever you decide, please post. I am interested in hearing how it goes at either place and it will help us decide on a plan. Thanks again!

How competitive is admission to Samford's School of Nursing? Any idea what GPA is necessary for admission?

    Auburn BSN

I have a daughter at Auburn looking into the nursing program. She will most likely apply with a 3.4-3.5 and it is discouraging to read these posts. She is currently trying to decide how to proceed. Wondering if she is not accepted should she pursue another degree at Auburn and then look at a 2nd degree program? OR apply at Samford, UAB and AUM. I know she loves Auburn and would be sad not to receive her degree from there. Symphie, Is it realistic to commute to AUM? Were you accepted at UAB? Is Samford University any less competitive? Thanks for the advice.
