    fetal heart rates

WE assess FHT's every 15 min in second stage, however, some docs like it AFTER EVERY CONTRACTION during this stage, and others just have us spot check every so often. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* MEC HAPPENS.....and I am USUALLY the MAGNET!!!!! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

    Nurses caps!

I am thinking of buying a whole bunch of caps from Kaycaps and selling them on ebay!!! If the one I saw went for over $50, then maybe I could make some dough on the side!!!!

    Would like info on waterbirths....

I thought this forum would be a good place to see if I could glean further information on what other practioner's protocols are for waterbirthing. Our unit has just started waterbirthing, after a LONG year of trying to get our docs on board. We only have one doc that is willing to do them at this time and I was lucky enough to be the nurse on duty when our first 2 came in this last week. We have had a couple seminars from a Midwifery group that over 80% of their deliveries are waterbirths, and it was very informative. However, I am trying to glean some futher information on what other practitioners do. In order to waterbirth at our facility, you have to have NO risk factors....NO MEC....No Pitocin....and we just were able to talk the doc into letting us use Stadol. Our policy is also, that pt has to get out of the tub to deliver the placenta. ANyhoo, our docs are BIG on Pit augmentation, and I was wondering if any of you who have experience with waterbirthing have used Pitocin. I did run across one nurse who told me their unit allows it as long as the Pit has been off for 30mins before the birth. I thoroughly enjoyed my two waterbirth experiences and want to be able to promote more of these in our unit. So, I am trying to gather as much info as possible on what other units/practitioners do so as I can present them to our lone "MAVERICK" waterbirthing MD in hopes of providing this opportunity to a greater amount of our clients. THe doc told me if I could find the info, he would look at it and consider it!!! THanks in advance for any info/advice you can send my way on this matter!!!
  4. I am looking for further information on what your units protocals are for waterbirthing. I was fortunate enough to get both of our waterbirths this month, and now have been given the task to check into what other facilities protocals are. Our two moms gave rave reviews for their waterbirths, so now our unit is GOING TO TRY and get more of the docs on board as well promote it more throughout our area, in hopes of getting some of our market share back! Our policy for waterbirths is NO RISK factors what so ever!! If there is any mec at all...no waterbirth...if put on pit...no waterbirth...the list goes on and on!!! I guess the big one that our unit is looking at is can they have a waterbirth if their labor was augmented, but the pit was then shut off for a certain length of time???? OUr docs tend to run a lot of pit!! I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with H2o births...eventhough this last one had some mild shoulder dystocia and it was a bit tense for a few seconds as we flipped the mother to hands and knees while keeping the baby's head under water. BUt we had a great outcome with apgars of 8 and 10!!! Anyhoo, if any of you would care to share your units protocals on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it!!!:kiss ~*~*~*~*~*~*MEC HAPPENS*~*~*~*~*~*~*
  5. I was the nurse on duty and got it!! WOO HOO! Just had to share my excitement about it!! It was such an awesome experience. I could not believe the difference in how much calmer the babies come out. THis little one barely even cried and I kept checking for heartones and respers way too often, because her behavior made me nervous!! Did note that the apgars tend to be lower..usually off for color, and they come out so much cleaner!!!! It was so neat to see the babe float out underwater with her eyes open and as calm as can be! This was the moms 4th baby and after it was all over, I asked her which she preferred.....her land births or a watebirth, and she said she would waterbirth any day over land!!! SHe transitioned so quickly that we barely had time to pull on the vet gloves!!! So far we only have one doc that is doing them and another that is SLOWLY coming on board, but when word gets out, I think the docs will have to be more open to meeting their patients needs. THis is going to be BIG here!!! WE have another due this week for waterbirth, and I hope I get that one too!!! It was such a rush that I was on a HIGH the remainder of the shift!!!! Anyhoo, just had to share the news!!!

    Birth Control--Ortho patch

I do love the convenience of it, because I am so non-compliant with taking meds po. However, I have started getting my usual headaches that I tend to get on the po pill. Still trying to figure out if it is coincidence or something else. THe spouse however, is still not convinced it will work. He still wants to use a condom with it...just in case! HAH!! I told him he does that then I am not going to use it. Talk about overkill!!! I am still on my first cycle of patches and will see how well I like it for the long haul! Did notice that it drastically reduced my milk supply for my baby! UGH!! However, do love the convenience of it! BTW, DOc at work told me the male form of the pill is only 5 yrs away, and there is a new type of device on the market for tubals, so it can be reversed for future pregnancy with a good success rate!! I asked him about that one, and he could not remember the name of it and said it just came out!!!!
