Got any funny acronyms at your ER???
not an acronym but funny: "bumsicle" and tooth to tattoo ratio, also looking at the board and saying "it's the hunters versus the deer and the deer are ahead" and NO we don't say these to patients or write them in the chart!

Salary question??
Thanks for the initial question, i've read each and every response and this is especially interesting to me because i am considering an offer for an in-house transfer. I am a BSN with 15 years of experience currently in upstate NY and I am just now earning 50K. I started working in Seattle and then New Hampshire and took a pay cut each time I moved. If I accept this new job (which is something I want to do for professional reasons) I will have to accept yet another pay cut. It is frustrating to earn less and less but this amount does seem comparable with other RN's in this particular hospital. If anyone is still responding to this thread could you please mention your geographical area and number of years experience? Thanks!

Artificial Nails Anyone
I agree- clean, trimmed, natural nails. Plus, at the risk of a riot, I think artificial or even long natural nails, especially with loud nail polish, looks trashy.

Plebian who wants to be tactful
I think you did the right thing- you are caring for the patients. The patients come first, and you did try to be tactful. Also, by offering to help you showed respect to your coworker. I can appreciate that it is difficult to point things out to coworkers, and at risk of being resented, but you can and should assure that proper care is being provided.

Is It Worth It?
Good question- in my opinion even though most nurses have their crabby moments, I think most nurses are happy with their career choice. I think if a nurse realizes it is not the right career, he/she will move on. One great thing about nursing is the variety of opportunities. I have worked in many specialty areas and I am very greatful for a change of scenery every few years. I feel like I made the right choice, because even though the work is tough and the hours long, I can't think of any other career that would be as rewarding. Certainly there are times, especially when I'm dealing with a particularly rude person, I wish I could do something else, but keep in mind rude people are everywhere. The times that I feel truly effective are the best, and the little thank you's from patients and coworkers are very rewarding.
