  1. I applied for both the NHSC and Nurse Corps loan repayment programs. I got notification of being a finalist for the NHSC loan repayment program on 8/16 and had until today to accept it. My Nurse Corps application is still under review. I accepted the NHSC because of the deadline, but I honestly wanted the Nurse Corps loan repayment. I have $250,000 in student loan debt and the Nurse Corps would have paid off more money, even with taxes, in the long run. I have talked with many people on Facebook groups and they all say NHSC is the program to go with because of the taxes on the Nurse Corps. Not only do they take federal taxes from the Nurse Corps program, but you also get taxed at tax time because you have to claim it as income. Either way, free money is always something to be grateful for. My facility has a HPSA of 17 and my debt to income ratio is 294%, I just wish I had a way of knowing if I would have been selected for the Nurse Corps. I was not risking the chance of getting on money. I feel like that is a way to weed people out, offer the one of lesser value first.
  2. I believe that is correct!
  3. Looking for some advice from anyone that has been in my situation. I applied for both the NHSC and Nurse Corps loan repayment programs. I am a finalist for the NHSC loan repayment program and my Nurse Corps application is still under review. I have not received a credit check at this point. I have approximately $250,000 in student loan debt so I wanted the Nurse Corps program more than the NHSC. I have until tomorrow at the end of the day to accept the NHSC offer, and it automatically removes me from the Nurse Corps application process. Based on conversations with people that have received the Nurse Corps repayment I have heard the taxes kills you. I plan on accepting the finalist offer for NHSC at the last minute that I can tomorrow. I would rather have something than nothing if I am not selected for Nurse Corps. My HPSA is 17 and my debt to income ratio is 294%. Has anyone received either of these awards, or have any advice? It is appreciated. Thank you.
  4. No, I don't believe so. If you look in the application it lays out how the funding is spread out.
  5. So they already did a credit check? Who did it say did the credit check?
  6. So they already did a credit check on you? Who did the credit check?
  7. If the feds stopped the program and the funding of the Bureau of Health Workforce and Health Resources & Services Administration then yes, they could. The funding from this program comes from a different place than the funding for the Student Loan Forgiveness program, which receives funding from the U.S. Department of Education. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, I'm just saying the guidelines and stipulations are much different. They are two completely different programs.
  8. RN4KU, BSN, MSN I currently work in Killdeer, ND for Coal Country Community Health Center. Our HPSA score is 17 and my debt to income ratio is 294.4%. Overall, I think I have good chances of getting the funding...I just pray daily for it! Haha, I literally do though. I definitely can understand your struggle. I still cannot believe how expensive education is, especially being exactly where I have dreamed since I was in 10th grade and being in the worst financial situation I have ever been in. My student loans (private and federal) are ridiculous. I did do the stepping stone process of going from LPN to 2-year RN to BSN to DNP, so I had a total of 10 years and taking loans out for all of it. If you want to do what furthering your degree will allow you to do I would say go for it!
  9. The current education secretary, Betsy DeVos, is trying to do away with this program entirely. It may have something to do with what is going on if they are trying to eliminate the student loan forgiveness program.
  10. This may be stemming from this...more than likely it seems. Betsy DeVos' latest attack on people with student loans will make your blood boil
  11. The program described in the article you posted is different than the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment program. The program in the article is the student loan forgiveness program. I looked into this program also but it does not pay off your loans as quickly and the service obligation, as it states, is 10 years. The Nurse Corps Loan Repayment is a 2-year commitment initially with an opportunity to apply for a third year. The application and information is very specific. I haven't heard of these things happening with this program at all. If it has someone should post so! I know people get denied for many reasons that they don't believe are fair.
  12. Is anyone aware of, or have any knowledge, of around the time people have been awarded in previous years? I know that the deadline is September 30th. I have read some people getting notification as early as April or May and others not finding out until the last day. Also, this is my first year applying. I am currently a family nurse practitioner working in a rural clinic with a HPSA score of 17 and my debit to income ratio is 294.4%. I see that there are many people with debt to income ratios close to the 200% mark. I am really praying that I get some assistance with this program. I relocated my family specifically for this program. Good luck to all that applied!
