Hi. I have been working for the last 3 months on a specialized "Deaf/Hard of Hearing" acute care unit at my psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts. I am curious. Are there any other specialized units similar to this anywhere else?
What should we do??? I read a post that a nurse was killed on the job by a patient at a psychiatric facility. I feel deeply sorry for this nurse and everyone who was involved. Some people do not realize how violent psychiatric facilities can be. Man...
Has anyone administered herbal medicane therapy on a daily basis to your clients in any Northeastern USA hospital? Are PCPs reluctant to prescribe herbal medicane to their clients? :)

We have had one patient that states that he hears voices that tell him to kill himself. No one knows for sure if he really hears these voices, because he cannot hear any kind of audible voice. On our unit we have 2 social workers that are deaf and ...

This is a good question. Unfortunately I am not sure of the answer, but I am interested on the other replies you receive. However, this trend to closing psychiatric units/hospitals is not a good sign. Where are we going to put all those clients t...

Yes it does get frustrating and many staff get burned-out from the "personality disorder" clients. All clients need help, and you should not focus more energy on one client or type of client than another. The Personality disorder client (i.e. Borde...

After dealing with my current work stress and watching the CNN review of the nursing field, I would have to pick number 5. I am undecided on what I will do within the next 5 years. However, CNN predicts that because I am under 30 years old, there w...
Congratulations!!! I'm glad to hear that there was such a high percentage of those of you that voted against the ANA. I glad to hear such good progress. I just hope that your state union does what they say they will. ------------------
What is your legal right as a nurse or nurse's aid working in the psyche field when it comes to being harrassed by a client? This happened to a nurse's aid that I know. A client harrassed this nurse's aid for weeks, and the end result was that this...

Currently my friend is out of work because of stress. She is also looking for another job, because her current one obviously believes in putting staff in unsafe situations. I am outraged over this. It definitely demonstrates such a lack of respect...
One of my friend's told me that she is burnt out from being a nurse doing direct patient care. She told me that she has been a nurse for 11 years and wants a change. She does not want to do direct patient care anymore, but she still wants to utiliz...

DBT is used in my facility, but only a few people are trained in. The downfall with this therapy is that it is designed for clients in a out-patient setting. My facility uses it in an in-patient setting and from my opinion it is not that useful. F...

So far administration will allow this nurse's aid to work away from this client in a capacity outside of a nurse's aid role, but this has not been finalized yet. I still do not understand why this has to go through so many obsticles till someone can...

Learning ASL is useful, but it depends on what you plan to use it for. If you want to be a nurse with ASL fluency and be able to use these skills, then you would have to work in a facility that specializes in deaf clients. I do not know what is out...
First of all the most important thing is safety. This patient is disrupting the whole unit. This patient is agitating and threatening to other patients, and other patients are stating they want to harm this disruptive patient. A 1:1 is necessary, ...
