Ensuring superior functionality in the most demanding of hospital environments, the Thermometer TemporalScanner™ Model TAT-5000 by Exergen easily stands up to the heavy duty demands of a high-performance hospital workplace, including intensive care units and emergency departments, and all inpatient units. Depending on patient care requirements, this model allows the choice of using disposable covers, or cleaning between patients with a disinfectant wipe, providing the means for significant cost savings by eliminating or substantially reducing probe cover usage. This revolutionary feature provides payback for full hospital installation in less than one year.

The TAT-5000 model is backed by a Lifetime Warranty. The TAT200C model consumer TemporalScanner™ Thermometer is a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. Advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead. The TemporalScanner™ Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults. The TemporalScanner™ has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment.

Arterial Heat Balance Thermometry at an Exposed Skin Site: Accuracy, Comfort, and Convenience for Patient and Clinician

There has in the past been no method of thermometry that is considered by patients and clinicians to be comfortable, convenient, and accurate. Rectal, oral, axilla, and ear thermometry all have either significant discomfort due to the use of a body cavity, artifactual inaccuracies due to physiological/device phenomena, or both, thus making them less than desirable for the needs of both patient and clinician. The exposed skin eliminates the use of a body cavity, but an accurate method using the skin has heretofore not been demonstrated.

The superficial temporal artery demonstrates the necessary requirements for the skin thermometry method: it is easily accessible, contains no mucous membranes, and notably, it has no or very few arteriovenous anastomoses (AVA). Lack of AVA's means that perfusion rate is reliable under essentially all conditions, and the blood flow is relatively free of vasomotor control in response to thermomoregulatory stimuli. This property is unique to the temporal artery when considering all accessible cutaneous blood vessels. The high and reliable perfusion allows accurate mathematical computations of the heat lost to the environment due to the cutaneous flow, and thus an accurate calculation of the source arterial temperature at the heart. As a site for temperature measurement, the temporal artery presents many benefits: it poses no risk of injury for patient or clinician, eliminates any need for disrobing or unbundling, and is suitable for all ages. Exergen TAT-5000S Connected models are now available on leading vital signs monitors for EHR data integration.

    About the Company

Exergen Corporation is the recognized world leader in industrial and medical non-invasive temperature technology. From providing temperature sensors for NASA and various industries to creating one of the world’s most popular baby gifts, Exergen creates non-invasive temperature measurement devices providing lower cost, higher accuracy, less invasiveness, and greater reliability than ever previously possible. The creator of the first temporal artery thermometer—the Temporal Scanner™, the most efficacious, non-invasive thermometer ever created. Exergen holds over 100 issued and pending U.S. and foreign patents, and is the only manufacturer of retail medical thermometers in the U.S. Presently, half of hospitals and pediatricians currently use the Exergen TemporalScanner™, and well over 4 million consumers use one at home.

Founded by Harvard-research scientist, Dr. Francesco Pompei, over two decades ago, Exergen Corporation is based in Watertown, Massachusetts, USA. Exergen, incorporating a patented and well-proven arterial heat balance method, developed instrumentation for non-invasive arterial temperature assessment on the skin over temporal artery.

Exergen Corporation provides educational materials on infrared thermometry through these education centers. We invite you to return regularly to learn more as we continue to develop this area of our site.
