private duty nurse in school

Published

i am a pdn working on a case with a child with a vent. iwas asking the question about vents and cpr when one of the users directed me here, but i am not sure this is the right place. she basically stated that the school nurses should have shown me an emergency plan and the crash cart{ there are 4 nurses and not one has said anything about those things} i have to carry every day the emergency supplies, feeding pump, ambubag, etc. there are no orders in my mar {i have my own from the agency separate fron the school} in what to do in case of emergency.i beleive we have the same orders. so my question is am i responsible or are they resonsible in case of an emergency or are both of us responsible? these questions are really important to me because there may be legal issues involved. {and by the way none of the other nurses know about the vent} also am i entitled to a 30 min break. they barely want to give me 5 minutes

this student should have a health care plan done immediately.

he/she should not even be in the building without one in place.

as far as the medical supplies go, most school are not set up for all of this.

you will probably have to continue to carry the needed supplies with you, seeing you are the private duty nurse.

as for lunch.....i don't get but 10 minutes. have to eat between students. that's probably pretty normal for most school nurses.

good luck with your student.

As the private duty nurse you are responsible for a health care plan and for all emergency interventions this child may need. You will need to continue to carry his equipment

When I did PD; i did not take lunch breaks etc. I would ask the closest nurse to cover while i was in the bathroom ..and you will probably need to orient them to the vent. many school nurses do not have such experience as a child with that many health issues requires a private duty nurse.
