Prior Medical Experience a Plus?

Published

Hi guys!

So I've done some in depth research about the program I'm interested in and I realized that there actually are no prerequisites to the program (with the exception of the A&P prereq which I satisfied in high school).

I'm worried that since I haven't done any other college classes I'll be at a disadvantage. I'm 20 years old and have been out of high school for 2 years. I'm worried that the lack of education since high school will be a negative against me.

I am, however, a Certified Nurse Aide and was a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant straight from high school. Do you think this plays a factor in consideration? I know the biggest part of it is the TEAS V score, but what else do you think could give me a hand?

Thanks!

It really depends on the requirements of the program and how they select students into it, if experience will help or not. Some of the programs that I looked into, especially the ones that had wait list, basically it was do the required prerequisite classes, take the needed test for the program, and than wait. My program that I am working on getting into is a point based system, which at this time still gives points for those who have experience working in the health field. With having 7 plus years of experience when I apply I will end up getting a nice amount of points that will go a long way in helping to make me competitive to get into the program. The best thing that you can do is to set up an appointment with an advisor at the school that you are interested in to find out what you need to do.

Specializes in ICU.

So there are no prereqs for your program? No micro or writing class? No psych? These are some fundamental skills you will need for the program. I would maybe look at schools that have prereqs. You will be in trouble if you ever want to get a BSN someday.

They are completed as corequisites, they get done within the 2 years of nursing classes. They can be done before but don't have to. They only thing that absolutely needs to be satisfied beforehand is the requirement needed to take A&P

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

This isn't a vocational school, is it? Like a for-profit school? Make sure it's all transferable and accredited. That just sounds too good to be true.

I would be very concerned also, if the school is telling you that you don't need any pre reqs to get into the nursing program. I needed Psychology 100 and 200, Nutrition 100, English Comp 100, Statistics 200, Biology, A&P I and II, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Public speaking to get into the nursing program. I would, as someone else mentioned be sure to check and make sure it's an accredited college as well.

They require microbiology, english comp 1 and 2, a&p 1 and 2, intro to sociology, intro to psych, and a humanities elective to be able to graduate. They're integrated into the program sequence but can be done before you apply.
