PreNursing Fears

I have what may seem like a silly question. Is/was anyone else scared before starting nursing school? I have been an xray tech for 10 years, and have worked in CT for the last 8 years. I feel bored with my job and don't really have different prospects for the future in this field. I feel like I want to do something "more". I have applied to a nursing program (waiting to find out if I will get accepted). Some times I feel so excited about the possibilities of getting accepted to this program and getting started, other times I feel so scared about it. I don't know if it is normal to feel nervous like this (fear of the unknown). Any thoughts?

It's completely normal to feel nervous or anxious about something as crucial as a career change or committing to an intense program like nursing! I have wanted to be a nurse since I was little and have finally got accepted into a ADN program. I was extremely excited and relieved at first...but now the anxiety and fear are taking over. I started a blog and started reading other student nurses blogs and reading the forums on here and it's really helped me. If nursing is REALLY want you want, then you will do fine! I hope you get accepted!

I totally relate to you!

I left my job of 13 years...yes, 13, this January to pursue my dream of being an RN. Talk about scary! For the last 13 years I woke up and did the same old thing everyday! To leave that 'norm' is scary...not knowing what the future holds is scarier! In the beginning I had thoughts running thru my head like 'what if I can't do this?! What if I fail?!' thinking that and knowing you gave up a great job (not my dream job) of so many years is scary...it's not like I can just go back.

It's natural to be nervous...and it's ok :)

I'm starting an accelerated BSN-MSN program in September and am quitting my full-time job to do so. I'm extremely nervous about it, so you're definitely not alone!

If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough! It's completely normal. Look up Joshua 1:9. This has always helped me when I feel overwhelmed or fearful

At 37 I took the plunge last summer :) I just finished my 1st semester of nursing school. It was scary, overwhelming, time consuming and downright nerve-wracking lol but worth it all.

I am 47 and am taking the plunge into nursing. Before I started my pre-reqs, I was extremely nervous and worried that I wasn't smart enough for nursing school. But I am DETERMINED to do this, so I do what it takes. I finished pre-reqs with a 4.0 and WILL make it through nursing school. :0) You just have to make up your mind to do this, but yes, it's still very scary. You're definitely not the only one.

I got a bachelor's degree years ago, became a cop although I worked part-time several years ago as a paramedic, and then I went back for a second bachelor's degree in nursing. I was never worried about school or passing, but I was apprehensive about two things: having to suck it up and do their darned, time consuming busy work and looking like a total retard in their school scrubs...which I did.

I'm right there with you! Excited as I can be, yet nervous at the same time. I'm waiting to begin my first semester in the fall. I want this bad and I can't wait to begin but I'm dreading that first day too! Good luck to you.

I'm with you on the nervousness. I failed out my first sem. of nursing school in Fall 2011, so this past year I have taken CNA 2 coursework and really tried to get my life in order so I don't make the same mistake twice this coming fall. It's scary because I know the demands nursing school requires, and while I know I am smart enough to do well, the fear of failing (again) is still in the back corner of my mind!
