Pre-req math classes for nursing school

I'm starting my pre-req's for nursing school next year and I was just wondering, what type of math classes are required for getting into nursing school and are they hard?

Keep in mind I am HORRIBLE at math. I am willing to work hard to pass the classes though.

Any input would be great!

Thanks

My school did not require any math pre-reqs. However, you will need to know how to calculate dosages when in nursing school. It is not complicated but you will need to know quantities of time, volume and mass and how they relate regarding medications.

It depends on what college you go to. I had to take intro to algebra and survey of math for my associates, I'm working on some classes toward my BSN so I have taken intermediate algebra and going to take college algebra. Every semester we had to take a dose calculation test and have a 90 or better or we couldn't continue! Hope this helps study hard and with God all things are possible!

It all comes down to fractions. Let's put it this way, my fourth grader was able to do most of the math calculation questions from Saunders

College algebra and statistics were the two my program required.

As juliaann said, algebra and stats are usually required.

Hi there,

It depends, associate degrees vs BSN. In California, an associate degree from an accredited community college requires, at least algebra introduction. State universities (at a BSN level)

require minimun, intermediate algebra, and above. Be very weary of "nursing programs" that do not have any math requirements.

Best of luck...

College Algebra and/or Statistics Prior to Getting into the Nursing Program.

Pharmacology Once I was in the Program.

College algebra 1, which is a much needed class for med calculations.

If you plan on getting a BSN, you will eventually have to take Statistics also.

I had to take a college statistics class but thats it...

I think others in my BSN program didn't place into the Calculus math class on their placement test so they had to take intermediate algebra. I think the nursing dept. in my school wants us to have atleast a college algebra knowledge for math to do dosage calculations.

agreed with everybody that says College Algebra for ASN, plus statistics if you want your BSN.

I will say though... these classes can be VASTLY different depending on what instructor you get. Some are better than others. Some teach you so you WILL get it, some just teach you and "who cares" if you get it. So I when I'm taking a subject I'm not particularly good in (history... ugh!) I always ask around, go to Rate My Prof, or something like that to find somebody that has a good history of the class being fair.

For an example, my stats prof was AWESOME. I made an A, knew my stuff backwards and forwards, it was hard but he was fair and taught it correctly. That summer, right after I took it, I tutored a friend with her online stats class.... holy cow, our minds together barely made a B.

I attend gpc in Atlanta. I am doing my prereq's and I have never early been a faof math. I took an entrance test called Compass. Based on how I scored on that determined if I needed remedial math before the college math. I bombed the test and have to take remedial Math before I can take College algebra. Ughh!! The college only requires college math but it's taking a while to get there. I agree with the others every school is different. You can do it!!!
