Why do you want to be a nurse?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm just curious to see the responses to this, and maybe there's a thread like this which I missed, but why do YOU want to be a nurse?

If you're fresh from HS, why did you choose nursing over other career options?

If you're returning to school, why are you going back for a career change and why nursing?

I keep asking myself that question everyday....:chair: (I just thought this was cute)

Specializes in mostly rheumatology.

I went back to school 10 years ago for a Medical Assisting program after being out of school for 11 years. I worked in the field for 6 years and loved it. I've always wanted to further my education to a nurse. My stepmother is a nurse and loves it. I've applied to start a LPN couse this fall and I am waiting to see if I am accepted. When I was an MA, I worked with the best MD in a clinic setting. I loved my job. I am so excited to finally (hopefully) start the next step of my career.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I like nursing for the stability, money, flexibility, upward mobility, abundance of jobs, and the ability to help people in their times of need.

Factory workers at General Motors can earn twice as much money as nurses, but their jobs are far less stable. If they are laid off or terminated, they have extreme difficulty finding another job that paid them similarly. As a nurse, I can easily find another job.

Specializes in RN-BC, CCRN, TCRN, CEN.

Well to be honest I never even thought about it until I started working in the dietary dept of a LTC facility. All my life I've flopped between Broadcasting and Commercial Airline Service. This came out of nowhere and now I look at my college schedule and think to myself 'where the hell did this come from?' lol

I am really enjoying everybody's responses! Thanks :)

I am an older student returning to school. I admit I haven't been inside a classroom, other than volunteering in my children's classes, in almost 20 years. I am so loving it!!!

I have wanted to be a nurse since I was pregnant with my first son (17 years ago). Going into Labor & Delivery is my dream job though I know it's very popular and will be hard to get into. While I was pregnant, I devoured every book on birthing and pregnancy that I could get and craved more. I talked my birthing instructor's ear off, I think!! That goes for my doctor and nurses. I think I have a great personality for helping people and for comforting them when needed.

My son was injured at birth five years ago (brachial plexus injury). I spent countless hours around medical professionals, and realized how important the support and compassion from the professionals meant to our family. I wanted to be a part of that. One nurse in particluar stood out on our thrid trip to Texas Childrens Hospital in Houston. Yes, there were crappy nurses along the way, but this woman really paved the way for my own path in life. My little guy is starting kindergarten in the fall, the timing is right for me, so I'm going for it.

One of many reasons why I choosed to be a nurse is because I've been working in the business field for over 10 years and at first I enjoyed it because I loved utilizing the computer and learning different software but after a while I realized that I wasn't contributing to anything. I was making other people rich and in the process felt as if I was making my outlook on my career poor. I want to make a difference. I want to smile from the inside out when someone smiles at me for making their day a little better. What better field than Nursing to make me feel all of these things.

Becoming a nurse has been my passion ever since I was 15. My mother was diagnosed with kidney failure and being there for her and the way those nurses handled her really inspired me to want to become a nurse. I hope that I am not insane but I am going to go for it!!!

Specializes in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Flight.

The thing that really attracts me to nursing is the traveling aspect. I want to travel all around the planet and work with people for free but when I actually need funds I can come back to the states and work as a traveler.
