Vocabulary Question for NLN Pre-Ent. Exam

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Ok, I am studying to hopefully take this test in November (the NLN Pre-Entrance Exam). Now, I am having a really hard time with the vocabulary. I look at some of these words and think "How in the world would I know that!!".

Anyone have any suggestions besides the NLN study guide to study for the vocabulary section? I feel pretty confident with the science and math (more-so than vocabulary anyway). Just feel like I am missing something with the vocab!!

Thanks!!

I could have written this post! I definitely excel in science and math, and pretty much sink when it comes to vocabulary. Mabe I should have taken latin roots in high school...oh well. I am interested to see what responses this posting will get.

hi,

here is my story. i took NLN on oct 14. i didnt study for english, not even for 15 min. test wastarted at 8:35. first part was english. the night before test i was watching movie until 3am of morning so in teh test i was so sleepy. during the test i saw time it was 9:20, and i thought i have time until 10:00 i forgot test was started at 8:35 not on 9:00. when it was 9:35 i heard pencils down. i was so confused, i only finished 53 qu out of 80. out of 53 Qu i am sure the firt 30 for vocubalary are wrong because that words i have never heard or read in my whole life so i just made guess. i was well prepared fro math and science. but i was not able to complete math part coz of time shortage. i did well in science. so watever left i just make a guess on scan paper without even looking at the questions. i got my result with verbal 26, math 25(i was so confident abt math lol) science 43 so my overall composite score is 108 and percentile 91 that is good enough for me. another thing is science and math questions are mostly from the NLN study guide. lots of graphs in science section and lots of questions on %age, ratio in math.math part was little bit tough.

i hope my story will help you. if u can practice on the comprehensive paragraphs in english. make a good speed to read the paragraph and find answers. that will help a lot. trust me. best of luck for thetest.

Try this it worked for me:

Google or yahoo latin prefixes and suffixes. You will find pages that list them and their definitions and then study those too.

Good luck.

PS. the science section on the test is mostly made up of physics.

Regarding the Physics portion, do they at least give you the formulas? I took Calculus based Physics 8 years ago... there is NO WAY I am going to remember the formulas! :uhoh21:

Vocabulary is something you have to build over time and if your taking the NLN in November I suggest you focus mostly on the other parts of the test and do the best you can on the verbal... Even if you learned all those words in the study guide there is no gaurantee you'll see any of them on the test. The Math was SIMPLE you might want to review the science...

I just got my Pre NLN results back. I took the test on 10/21/06. I was really worried about the Verbal section as well. I quessed on almost all the verbal questions but felt confident in the reading section of the test and feel that that part really brought my scores up. I thought that I would have scored at about the 40 percentile and actually scored at 73%. I scored better than 73% of the people with 18 questions wrong out of 60 so don't sweat it. I also scored 95% in math and 98% in science section. These too, I had alot of questions wrong but still came out strong compared to others. As long as you can get through the reading questions and answers, you'll be able to pull through too. My overall composite score was 136 and 95 overall percentile. Good luck!!

I also just took the NLN exam 10/21/06 and just received my results. I did the practice tests in the review book but did nothing else to improve my vocabulary. I scored in the 91st percentile on the verbal. I didn't feel very confident about a lot of the vocabulary on the exam but many of the questions I was able to eliminate one or two answers and take a guess from the remaining choices. The recommendation of looking up common latin roots was a good one, wish I had thought of that, can't complain though. I was pretty pleased with my results.

I'm so confused by this. I got a composite score of 114, but my percentile was less than 91...why is that if my composite score is higher? Am I reading something completely wrong? I am so upset right now because I don't think I got in. How can I have a lower percentile if I had a higher composite score than the poster quoted above? HELP!! I'm freaking out!:bluecry1:

Can someone explain to me how I find my percentage then?
