Taking Baby STEps

  1. HELP!!

I don't have any college experience, in fact, I don't even have a high school degree, I have a GED. I am 41 soon to be 42 years old and I am so intimidated just thinking about meeting with one of the enrollment personnel at the school. My questions is I reside in Baltimore, Maryland and the community college offers the RN program. You must take the Accuplacer Test as part of enrollment. The accuplacer will test you on Reading, Writing and Math. What if all 3 parts of the test were failed , what is recommended re-testing or development classes?

I haven't taken the test yet, but I am preparing for the worse...the last time I attended school was when I was 27 years old for my Computer Processing&Bookkeeping Certificate.

But, I've always wanted to be a nurse working in the PICU preferably .

Congrats on your decision to go back to school.

First of all, there is no "failure". If you don't make the minimum score to get into the nursing level of math, you simply are place in remedial math classes, and general math classes and you work your way up to Algerbra and Dosages and Calculations. The same with the English, if you aren't ready for college level English, you start with some lower level courses and work you way up the College English.

But don't put "failure" in your vocabulary. They are only finding out where you are and you are not a failure. You might not be ready for college level math and English (then again you might, you never know), but you can't fail when you have a dream in your heart.

    Good luck!

What a wonderful gift to give to yourself, pursuing your dream. Age does not matter as I am many yrs older than you and am on the brink of my nursing clinicals in August. I know that scarry feeling, but guess what you are not alone and will take all the necessary steps to make happen what needs to happen. I took basic math to start with and finished all the way through algebra. I am very proud of myself and will continue to strive and be proud... you do the same. I wish you all the best and keep moving forward!!

I think it sounds like a great plan. There is a Maryland forum here with people that could give you more local information on the different schools, classes etc. Best to you, Jules
