Stuck Pre-Nursing Student; Feeling Frustrated

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I am currently completing my last pre-req at community college, Microbiology. I am hoping to get into the RN program for the Fall. This will be my second time applying, was waitlisted last year, at spot 84. I am feeling a bit down lately. Trying to stay positive that I will get in this round, but am worried I may not.

My current plan is, if I don't get in this round, getting my bachelors in Public Health. I currently work as a HHA in town and love it. So I think if I get my BS and then apply for accelerated BSN programs.

Does this sound like a good route? Hate to waste money, you know? I just need advice of fellow students and current nurses. I have also contemplated ultrasound and radiology tech, since they can branch to different avenues, but nursing is my true passion.

Thank you!

I should add, that I did buy the dosage calculation book for my program to prepare in case I start in September.

Hello future RN ,

I'm gonna be honest . I am almost in the same boat Except I'm done all mine Except nutrition cause no school in my state offers it unless your in the program . I started to major in behavioral science and do an accelerated but I just didn't like it , I love nursing , but hey it may work for you . But I suggest you apply to more than one college . You never know . I applied to like 4 for the fall & I'm tryna find more to apply to. One idea is going to get your Lpn then do Lpn to BSN program. I'm about to sit for my Lpn boards and thinking about doing that too . Just don't give up , I have faith you will take the route that's best for you and become a great nurse !

I think that's a good plan. It doesn't make sense to keep holding out on a waitlisted nursing program. I went through an Accelerated BSN program and I had a classmate who has an MPH degree. He has a passion to work with the underserved aids population. My future plan is leaved the bedside and retire in public health, and with your background you'll be a great asset.

I would go with your true passion, which is nursing. ABSN programs are very expensive, rigorous, and many require your undergrad GPA be at a minimum 3.0, so it's important to keep your GPA in good standing.

I know you said that you hope to get in in the Fall. Have you applied to any other schools in the area just in case to better your odds of getting into a program for the spring/fall if you submitted your apps. I can understand not wanting to waiting to possibly not get in the second time. I say don't give up but I did consider radiology as a back up when I submitted my apps this year.

Good luck to you! I was accepted to a LPN program to start in January. But it was going to be close to $30K. I wasn't ready to spend that to still go back to RN, BSN. Here where I am, new LPN' s are working as CNA's because there are not a lot jobs.

I applied to a school about an hour away as a backup. Will find out about both in May. It seems like its harder to get into schools as a transfer than ASBN applicant.

Granted the job market is tough for all nurses, but I feel that having that BSN and a degree in public health could put me at an advantage. I hope!

It won't necessarily put you at an advantage but it will be a great selling point to NMs if you decide to pursue public health nursing jobs.

A new grad is a new grad whether they have a previous degree or not. It's tough all around for new nurses.

Thank you so much ! But oh my lord , see I did it in high school for free , and I live in Delaware were they have programs you can go for no more than 5,000 total & it's a yr program . And true money is always an issue , but it all depends on a area about jobs , like you said you already work as a HHA, at least after a yr experience you could work for tht company . Im a tech in the hospital so I know after my Rn I can get in cause my foot is already in the door . But nursing homes & prisons hired lpns. I think nursing homes always will , you can pay them less so hey

Wow, $5k, I'd definitely do it then! See, if I knew I'd get a job here as a LPN, then I'd do it, maybe a cheaper program. Job market is definitely tough for all nurses, lpn or rn. I wish you luck: ).
