Regarding your GPA. My friends always says, "B's = degrees" which is especially true once you get into nursing school. Ask the nursing departments for a paper that shows how they determine who gets in their nursing program. Some nursing programs still go off a waiting list and pick randomly from it. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the advice. I did go to an advisor to ask, but they're in "registration mode" so they aren't addressing any other questions, I'll have to wait until we're a couple weeks into classes and their office isn't so crazy. Thank you :)

Hi, I wanted to know if anyone has gotten into nursing school with a GPA. I have 2 semesters left in my undergrad I currently have a 2.56 GPA. I know it's horrible. I had a difficult 3 years. With personal circumstances where I pretty much messed. In that time I was able to maintain a job at a hospital for 10 years. I moved up to upper management with 2 promotions. In my ten years I also was a clinical research specialist for a year. I have my CNA certificate. I also have prerequisites left. Last semester I got a 3.0. I know I can get better grades now which I have proven. I would like to get into a ELMSN program at Samuel Merrit but they require a 3.0 on last 60 units. Or the Accelerated Nursing program. Not sure what to do at this point. I have a great personal statement overcame many obstacles and have several letters of recommendation. Is it too late? Has anyone gotten into nursing school with a low GPA? 2.5-2.7GPA.

To the several people on this post that have a low g.p.a., i understand where you are coming from. I went through many things starting with my freshman yr in new orleans and going through Hurricane Katrina and losing everything and deciding to come back after they said the school was repaired (it really wasnt). Being so sick that i needed to leave the state at the end of my sophmore yr (my grades suffered because of it) & go back to my home state of Ca where i got my bachelors from a UC and thrived academically. But i couldnt bring my gpa up from where it had fallen no matter how much i tried. I went to about 4 universities/colleges b4 i finally got my degree. Once i finished i decided that i wanted to go into nursing and wanted to do an EL-MSN program but it just wasnt reasonable to think with my gpa that it would happen. I went into my pre-reqs and after 1 yr of additional pre-reqs (previous bio major so i had most of them done). I applied to a handful of 2yr ASN programs out here and i have been accepted to 2 already for the Spring 2011 semester. So i just want to tell you guys dont give up. My gpa was was about a 2.85 cumulative which is pretty low compared to everyone else (but keep in mind in total i went to about 6 schools). It can be done just dont give up & if the first way you try doesnt work, search for alternatives. I plan on doing a RN-MSN program after i finish. Goodluck to everybody and i hope you all find your way into this profession =)

I got into an ABSN program and my GPA was far from stellar! Do really well on your prereqs and make sure your last 90 units are near perfect! Check out schools that only look at the last few units taken or schools that only calculate your qualifying GPA based on classes they require. PM if you need a few school suggestions! Good luck and you can get into a nursing school

Hi guys - would some of you guys please mention what schools you have gotten into? I too have a low gpa with my first bach. but have good grades with my pre reqs. and I am trying to apply to multiple schools so that I can get into an BSN program...particularly an ABSN.

Thanks!

I know your in Cali but there is a school in Oklahoma that accepts EVERYONE as long as they meet the requirements. Its called Oklahoma City University (http://www.okcu.edu). They have some type of agreement with the government to decrease the nursing shortage. They have BSN, ABSN, MSN, and doctoral programs. They only turn people away for the doctoral programs. Of course its pricier than community colleges but if youre really discouraged then you should give it a try. I looked at their ABSN program and its around $43,000. Im in the same boat youre in. I have a 3.37 and thats not good enough to get me into any schools in MI, so Ive been applying to schools in Ohio and Indiana instead. If I dont get accepted into any of those programs then Oklahoma will be my LAST resort. But when you want something bad enough you have to do whatever it takes to get it. If I do have to end up going there the only thing I wouldnt like is the lack of diversity I hear the state has especially since Im black and in MI we have people of all the colors of the rainbow here:mad:

Hey there Starmickey03, thanks so much for the link, I was seriously hopeless and discouraged until I found this school that I might have a chance to get into. Did you get into Ohio or Indiana? Do you know if OKCU have a good rep for nursing?

I also am not sure about getting in, I have around a 2.84 gpa, i know not so good but i got an A- in Biology which is one of the prerequisite and i am going to take the rest next fall and plan on doing really good in them hopefully getting A's. regardless i took remedial math classes and the first time i didn't drop it in time so i got a F on my transcript and another take i have a w on it for the same class because this all happened when my brother was sick he had muscular dystrophy and he was getting really weak and we thought he might die and not too much long after he did so i was having a really hard time in school and everything else but i took it again for a third time and got a B and then i took the next one up and got a C in the other remedial class which isn't so good and then i got a C- in my communications class which is also bad and on my midterm for my last remedial class i got a 64. so what do i do? should i try and finish up this class and try and pass it or do i withdraw from it and then retake it next semester. also with i got a C+ in intro to psych because the class was actually really hard. So what do i do should i retake all of those classes or would it look really good and if i bring up my gpa then will i still have a chance to get into fitchburg state or salem state or maybe even worcester state or umass boston or umass dartmouth.

also i got a B in all of my English classes; College writing, English I, English II, an A in my Critical thinking class, and a B in my computers and technology class.

If u r willing to move try the metro campus of interamericana university in Puerto Rico. Low 2.25 gpa admission requirement. No waitlist cause they accept everyone. Not to late to apply for august 1 start date. I got accepted and I'm leaving tomorrow.

Check out this thread for more info...its lengthy but all very important info on the school.
