Is Nutrition course really the hardest course?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Updated:   Published

Hi guys,

I'm taking Nutrition online in 8 weeks during Spring. All my friends say it's the hardest course they've ever taken no matter which professor I choose; even harder that A&P and Micro.

Is there any way I can go over the course material before to see if I am able of taking it in 8 weeks and online or not? I checked Youtube and I couldn't find anything.

what was your experience with Nutrition course? was it really hard and time consuming?

My nutrition course was difficult. Knowing the signs and symptoms of vitamin deficiencies and hypervitaminosis (differentiating between the B vitamins killed me - Niacin vs biotin vs pyridoxine vs pantothenic acid, etc), where and how each nutrient is absorbed in the GI tract, how is it metabolized, which types of food contains what nutrients, etc. There was tons of reading and quizzes/tests and SO MUCH busy work it was unbelievable. Super important stuff but very much NOT my favorite class.

Been awhile but my nutrition course was not that hard, mostly common sense. I hope the rumors about yours are not true. Good Luck.

Well, it does sound like a 200 level course. However, it is still no near harder than A&P. Besides, it can be hard if you make it out to be. As long as you study and don't procrastinate, you should be fine.

Actually Micro and A&P was not hard at all to me. It was just a lot of memorization. thank you for your answer.

The first time I took nutrition, the professor was one of those who went out of her way to make the class as hard as possible. She was a retired neonatologist/med school instructor whom I suspect never really figured out how to teach at the undergraduate level. I ended up dropping it. The second time around? Piece of cake. It is NO WHERE NEAR as hard as A&P. A&P itself isn't that hard as long as you consistently study.

well my friends say there is 4-5 chapters each week to cover! I'm not sure if they are just exaggerating or my school professors are offering the course this way!

Hi there,

I didn't care for the Diet and Nutrition class I had online. The professor was bleh. She wanted us to work with the MyPlate website and it sucked. I hated that site. Fortunately, I didn't really need nutrition to get into the nursing program, so I withdrew.

It can depend on the professor you have whether a subject is easy or hard.

Haha not even close! I'm taking it online and maybe that makes a difference? There is a lot to learn but I don't find it any more difficult than most Biology type classes. Anatomy and Physio are MUCH harder. My suggestion, go to quizlet and find practice questions from classes using the same book or a close edition. Watch youtube crash course and maybe Khan academy. But quizlet will give you the best practice for the chapters you are on. Maybe your professor is just demanding way above normal?

Nutrition for me was harder than I expected. I took nutrition while taking API, i should of taken it after API but it still worked out for me. I received an A and i learned so much valuable information. I busted my behind for that A, it really depends on your professor, mine ran a nutrition department at a large hospital nearby so she was very rough on us. Its like nurses at her job used to mess up in the nutritional aspect of things and she was talking it out on us or simply preparing us (depends on how you want to view it).

Specializes in Neurosciences, stepdown, acute rehab, LTC.

Must be your specific school, that's generally not true at all.

I am currently taking my nutrition pre-req online through the University of Rochester. There's lots of material to cover and lots of memorization, but the info is really interesting and the textbook is very readable and relevant (definitely designed for a nursing student). Your final grade depends on your weekly quiz grades. So far I have an A. The course isn't cheap (roughly 1k) but i'm really pleased and definitely recommend it.

Specializes in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Nutrition was easy peasy. I even drank my Monsters in there to annoy my professor (she and I were cool though haha). I even took a second class just because I liked learning about nutrition despite myself not heeding to what I learned lol. My hardest GED/pre-req class for me was Physiology. I had the worst instructor ever. I would say for most, math and statistics seem to be the hardest.

Specializes in Oncology.

i feel like it really depends on the school and professor. I took nutrition in exercise science bachelor's and it was not too bad- minus the 45-50 page paper I had to write along with a full meal plan for 1 week.

Most people I talked to talked about how difficult that class was, but I ended up with a 97 overall. I found it easy.
