How Long Did You Have To Wait To Get Into NS?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I was just wondering how long it has taken those of you who have been accepted to get in? Did u do a year's worth of pre-reqs? The program that I want to get into only accepts students once a year...is this the norm? I want to get in sooo bad but it is very competitive! So, I was just wondering if anyone else had to wait a year before being accepted!? Maybe if someone else has done that then I won't worry as much if I don't get on the first shot and maybe not as depressed. :) just wanting to know what other's have been through! Thanks!

Changed majors in the middle of my prereqs so it took me 5 semesters for those.. would have been faster if I knew I wanted to do nursing when I started.

Got into nursing school a semester faster than I thought I would even qualify for.. so no waiting at all! They accept 80 students 2x a year.. 1000 or so applicants each time.

Don't feel bummed - many people are waiting at least a year to get in, some even longer - I've heard a few waiting up to 3 years to get in! This is after all pre-reqs which are usually taking over a year to complete. Don't get discouraged - if nursing is really what you want to do, then it will be worth the wait! I am starting pre-reqs this fall (have a year of college towards another degree - so don't need all of them, but still need a year's worth) and know that I'll have a MINIMUM year's wait when I'm done - but it's ok, I will take classes that I can apply towards a BSN once I complete my ADN. I know it can really test your patience, but if it's truly what you want to do, then you will get through the waiting. :) Best of luck to you!

Thanks! I know that I am not the only one...I was just wondering if I had to wait longer because I am in WV. We don't have as many ns as bigger cities. I know a lot of people apply to more than one but that's kinda hard to do around here. Besides every school wants something diffrent..diffrent pre-req's..ect...It just makes me want to scream sometimes. Plus there are so few posiitions open in the school's which makes it harder. I appreciate your encouragement...at least I'll know that I am not alone if I don't get in this time. Thanks again! :)

I'm in my last semester of pre-req's, it's taken me four semesters, and I started with a BS already. Unfortunately my degree was not in Biology so that's my hold up, all the Bio classes piggyback off one another. I applied in June, we have three applications a year for the community colleges. I expect to get in in the spring, at the latest next fall. Most people in AZ are waiting at least one semester after applying, it all depends on what number you're given. We're given lottery numbers when we turn in our application, they date/time stamp them randomly and depending on your date/time stamp, you may wait one semester or even two. Unfortunately I got a pretty bad date/time stamp, but I"m still hopeful I'll get in in January.

Good luck,

I understand completely! I live 50 miles from the nearest ns and the population of my town is only a little over 60 people (not hundred or thousand, just 60). The next nearest school is an hour and a half and then after that, you're looking at a minimum of 2 hours to find one, so options are limited here as well - besides, like your area, they all have horribly long waiting lists. I, like you, really only have the option of applying to one school and, even then, will be commuting. It is rather frustrating, but it will be ok, at least we only have to worry about the pre-reqs for just that one school that way (like you said - all schools seem to want something a little bit different). Apparently your side of the country isn't doing much better than mine - I'm in Colorado :chuckle Oh well, take care - we will get through all this. Perhaps it's a good way to test our patience prior to becoming nurses :rotfl: Just keep your chin up and, when you start feeling sad, remind yourself that it will all be worth it in the end. :)

I decided to go to Nursing school in the middle of the Spring '03 semester. None of the prerequisites were offered in summer so I took speech and math. That was two years ago and I start NS next month. I was on the waiting list for 2 semesters before I got in. My school uses a point list and a chronological list. Thirty come from the point list and 10 from the chronological list. I got in off the point list. If your points aren't high enough (bad grades) it's a three year wait to get in off the chron list.

I finished what I needed in order to apply to my program in December of '03. Put in my app 12/03...starting 8/05.

Oh, and as a side note...I was told the wait was 2 semesters (so I should have been in 8/04), and I waited an extra year according to that. I quit my job in May of '04, thinking I'd start NS in August.:angryfire

Hi!!! I just red your post and I was wondering if you are going to saddleback or santana college. I also live in the OC and I'm curently taking my pre-reqs. I have heard that you have to get straight A's to get into the ADN program directly or in a year. Do you know if with one or two B's I have a chance that I don't have to wait three years?

I also wanted to meet someone here that lives in the same area as I. Finally I found you!!! Nice to meet you and good luck. Keep in touch.

Hang in there!! :) I applied 4 times and got in on the 4th try. I killed myself trying to take all the pre-reqs the first year just knowing I would get in-yeah right! I didn't and I was very upset, but I knew that I am meant to be a nurse and I just kept at it. I am now in my first year of the ADN program and only have 4 semesters to go! You can do it!!! Best of luck!
