Found out some very disturbing information today!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I was chatting with another student from one of my classes today and she told me something very disturbing about the school that we are attending and the nursing program. She told me that getting into the nursing program for us is going to be very hard because of all the politics that go on at this school. It seems that certain groups of people get first choice and then others are doing unmentionable favors for the selection commitee to get accepted. She informed me that grades dont matter, the only thing that does matter is how far you are willing to lower your standards to do these certain favors. I am so disgusted at the remote possibility that this could be true that I am now thinking about a university instead. The school that I am attending is convenient and cheap. I dont know if I will be able to afford the tuition at a university and dont know what I should do. My question is: Is there any kind of laws governing how a college conducts their admissions policies? I dont think this is fair by any means, and I know that we should be weary of things we hear from others but this person is very credible. Thank you all for any suggestions you can offer. :angryfire

What kind of favors?

You mean like a casting couch?

How much do you trust this student? it is amazing how some students may try to manipulate things in their favor. Is this student a strong student with good grades, are you? Maybe she's trying for you to forget about applying to this school because you are a stronger student by using scare tactics. I would talk with some of the other students before assuming this student is correct. It may very well be true, but be careful of rumors...they take on a llife of its own.

"Only believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear."

I agree with Nurse Ratched's saying wholeheartedly, however, I cant help thinking that there is truth to what she has said. I am currently maintaining a 4.0 in my pre-req's so far and as far as I know, she is too. I have talked with other students and they all have said different things, but all ultimately lead to the same conclusion that even though the school says it bases admission on grades, this isnt always the case. I have heard so many different things it just boggles the mind, like a 4 year waiting list (which I know for a fact this one isnt true) that the classes for nursing are based on a lottery and if there are too many people registering for the same class they will put your name in a pool and pick names till they fill the class (this to me is just unethical because all the classes are first come first serve). Other's have said that students have gotten accepted with less than a 3.0 gpa and people with 3.7 gpa and higher have been denied in the same admission period. I am a bit concerned with all these rumors and just want to keep all my options available. I am going to apply to more than one cc nursing program when the time comes and right now I am researching all the cc's around me for the pre admission requirements and going to put that plan of action into play. I was really just wondering if there were any laws that could be used in case what I stated above does happen to be true.

YES!!!! The unmentionable favors is just what you are thinking! How low will people go exactly? From some of the people in one of my pre-req's right now I cant help but see the reality of this particular rumor.

Thanks for replying!

So . . .if the casting couch rumor is true . . my nursing instructors and the President of the Department were all women.

How do the men and women students go about the casting couch method?

Bisexual teachers?

Sorry - this strikes me as just so much nonsense. Nurse Ratched is right . .

Go and ask and find out the truth.

Steph, dont be sorry. I completely see your rationale in this and I am glad that you are forthcoming with your honest opinion. When you put it this way, it doesnt make much sense. I just called the person who told me this, and asked her where she got her information from. She said from a few students from one of her classes last semester and when I told her what you all said here, she seen it your way. That because she is a 3.8 gpa student these girls were trying to scare her into not applying. One of the girls apparently even suggested that she (my friend) transfer ASAP to another college because her chances of getting in were slim unless she was willing to do certain favors. LOL Now that I think about this, I have to laugh because of the absurdity LOL. I am glad that I found this site when I did, you all really do shed light on things. Thanks so much lol (sorry but I cant stop laughing now that I am visualizing a all female admissions commitee receiving favors from female students) Gosh how could I have been so naive? Oh well, live and learn! :)

Never believe anything you hear at school ... seriously.

99 percent of what I've heard never turns out to be true.

NONE of it. My school just instituted a waiting list and you wouldn't believe the rumors.

Of course, a lot of it is to discourage people from applying. But then a lot of it is just plain stupid too.

Rumours spread by someone with sour grapes is probably what it is. I seriously doubt it's true.

As others have said - all the administration in the nursing dept. and all the decision-makers are women. My gaydar is pretty well-honed and I'm fairly sure none of them are lesbians. So nope, that wouldn't fly at my school.

Also, I'm PRETTY sure there are laws against conduct like that (note the extreme irony in that last sentence - hell YEAH it's illegal!).
