Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

I am going away for the weekend (leaving fri a.m. not coming back until monday) I'm not sure I'll be able to take it thinking a letter may just be sitting in my box all that time!

LOL

Well, who knows? It could be Thurs! But if not- I guess just try not to think about it over the weekend, easier said than done, I know!

Do you have a friendly neighbor who could go and check for you?

What is the hold up on these letters!!!! I want a letter NOW!!!

Wife just called from home: STILL NO LETTER.

I am going to kick the letter carrier so hard in the shins if a letter doesn't arrive tomorrow.

Doesn't UCSF know I'm on msn messenger most of the day? They could just IM me!

Me too!!! But in a small way I prefer anxious anticipation to (possible) dissapointment and despair!

LOL yeah- me too- only I'm on yahoo messenger! Did you know Harvard Business School conducts their whole apllication process via email? From setting up interviews to the final decisions whether you are in or out. How cool is that? Except I would be checking my email 100x a day more than I already do! :chuckle

Hello all, I'm new to the posting boards and just happened on this thread, which echoes exactly how I've been feeling - STRESSED about getting those school decisions for direct entry programs.

I was turned down for the second time this year from UCSF (very sad for me). Then I got into SFSU, which was exciting until I learned that the NP option would take an additional 2 years of part-time schooling AFTER getting the generic MSN (BOO!). Now I have a Sam Merritt interview on Friday and am waiting to hear from USF.

Anybody else thinking of going to Sam Merritt? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the school.

Anyway, good luck to everyone - hopefully we'll all get those "thick" envelopes in the mail SOON!

Sorry to hear you got turned down at UCSF. Don't feel bad; they have over 400 applicants for 75 spots and even those spots have a higher ratio for the popular focus areas such as: FNP, PNP, ANP and mid-wifery. You could have stellar application, but if you applied for one of the more popular tracks, you could easily receive a rejection.

I take it you know there is a direct entry for a 2nd bachelors in nursing at USF (Univ of San Francisco):

AND a master's entry program BUT it is only for a health systems leadership option; it is not a FNP, PNP, ANP or any of the clinical specialists degrees.

A lot of us are going to direct entry BSN to MSN/NP programs on this thread, which would be a 3 year program (the 1st year is for the RN degree).

Are you going for the accelerated 1 year RN/BSN degree at Samuel Merritt? It is new. Raymond G has applied, so perhaps he can respond.

But at least you got into SFSU (San Francisco State Univ for all of you out of staters) for their generic MSN program, so that's something! Some of us are waiting for their initial letters! That's why there's a lot of tense energy in the air and anticipation with the snail mail!

hi guys,

I've had such a long day already and I see that you're all very frustrated. Some days I get scared and wonder why I even applied, but I try to remember what this is all about. I really want to do this!! Try not to stress for the next few days, especially since it's out of your hands right now. We are all awesome, intelligent people with big hearts. Keep laughing even when you want to cry :chuckle

Sweet dreams! Diana

ps- If you need a laugh, I posted the "Top Ten ways you know you're a nursing student" in another nursing student forum. See if you relate!!

Now I have a Sam Merritt interview on Friday and am waiting to hear from USF.

Hi! I also applied to both SFSU (20 month BSN) and Samuel Merritt. But both for their Accelerated BSN programs. Did you go for their ELMSN? My Samuel Merritt interview is the week after yours. Haven't heard squat from SFSU yet, but I think I have a good chance.

Please email me if you wish! If you go to my profile here you can do so. Did you also apply for the Kaiser Scholars Loan Forgiveness Program? I just did for the SMC ABSN.

Congrats on both of you guys getting interviews at Samuel Merritt (in Oakland, CA)! Let us know how it goes! That's a very positive sign!
