Am I kidding myself?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm feeling discouraged and overwhelmed and I need some moral support and/or someone to tell me I'm wasting my time. I have great grades in my current program of study (approx. 3.7, criminal justice, will be graduating w/ my b.s. in May 08) and decent grades for nursing prereqs. Decent, but not fantasticamazingsuperwonderfulEinsteingenius as is apparently needed to get into nursing school:devil:. The breakdown is as follows:

English 1101 - A

English 1102 - A

Psych 1101 - B

Human Growth & Dev Psych - B

Math 1101 - C

Statistics - C

Political Science - B

History - B

Humanities elective - A

Communication - B

Health/Physical Fitness - A

Sociology - B

Assuming I manage to pull off A's in A&P 1 & 2 and Microbio, am I going to be a competitive applicant for a nursing program (I'm in Georgia, btw)? I'll still only have a prereq GPA of approx. 3.33 or something like that. I don't think it will be enough...I think maybe I'm kidding myself... Any thoughts? Honesty is much appreciated.

Actually you have a lot of options so don't panic. The requirements for each school differ so your going to have to shop around and find one that suits you. You have a great GPA and will be getting a degree soon, so a big congrats to you!!!

Many schools look only at the GPA for pre requisites so the C's in classes not pertaining to nursing won't matter. Also you have an extra choice of getting an accelerated BSN, because you will already have a BA. So many many choices talk to an advisor you will have no problem getting into nursing but you will have to do a little leg work and see what exactly you will need to do.

good luck.

Katie,

What school are you planning on going to for your nursing degree?

Sweet Pea 1,

I will go ANYWHERE that will take me. I'm applying to GA Highlands for August '08 and expanding from there for Fall '09 if I don't get in. I'll have all of my prereqs done at that point so I'll apply again to Highlands as well as to Dalton State, Georgia Baptist, NGCSU, Clayton College & State University, Northwestern Technical College, Athens Tech, and Gordon College. Which program did you attend/are you attending?

PreRNKatie, please don't be discouraged. It looks like your grades for the courses that pertain to the nursing program, like A&P are great. As for the C's, I don't think they'll cause a problem. I actually have a few C's too, and I'm not too worried, because the other half of the classes I took, I made A's and B's. It's hard when you have a family and a job; you can't focus 100% sometimes. I truly believe I would have done a lot better if I didn't have to work full-time. You're not the only one. Just try your best, and don't give up!

I really appreciate everyone's support! All I can do is apply, and if I don't get accepted then I'll figure it out from there.

Your grades sound good to me. Try to apply to accelerated BSN programs, it seems they are not as competitive as ADN programs.

PreRN Katie,

I am doing my LPN, I hope to get into the program at Lanier Tech for Spring 08(starts in March). The reason that I am doing the LPN first is becasue the hope grant will pay for it. I plan on going back for my RN as soon as I get my LPN. I hope to go to NGCSU for the RN.

Good Luck:balloons:

Katie,

Definitely go for it. Every school is different and some schools offer accelerated programs for people who already have a degree. The two schools I applied to based entrance on GPA of prereqs and one also based on the TEAS test. There were ADN programs in my area that you just needed a 2.7 gpa, but because they were impacted they took people by lottery. So some of the people I did prereqs with went that route. Best of luck to you.

Really? That is interesting...never heard that before. But if it's true, that is awesome :)

Try not to cause yourself any more stress than is really needed. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Here is Ca all of the nursing programs are impacted, however the requirements to get into the nursing programs in my area are not all based on GPA. Most are based on the GPA of your science prereqs., TEAS scores and such, and most have a random component where there is a certain amount of luck involved in even getting your application randomly selected for review. So you have great chances of getting into and succeeding a a nursing program.

You're right about us sometimes being our own worst enemy, I could win an Olympic medal for worrying. All I can do is my best, right? Thanks for everyone's support and advice, I really appreciate it!
